Meet the Air Nauma!
This critter of Kalanora origin is a subset of the elemental Nauma species. Despite the nature of the element of which it is named, the Air Naumas are actually very very violent and territorial. Though they are only a few feet tall, they are capable of swarming even the largest of creatures should they drift near their homes high in the clouds.
Air Naumas often fight each other for sport, and when they come of age, must defeat their Tribe Master in pitched combat. If they cannot, they will be cast from the tribe as an exile. The more ferocious the naumas become, the more brilliantly bright red their coat of fur changes.

R'ylu here was born with a defect; she had no claws! Being coddled by a kind and caring mother, whose red coat had faded to pink due to her lack of ferociousness, R'ylu learned that trying to become friendly was much more worth her time than trying to hurt the ones she loved.
When it came time for the Rite of Passage, she refused to fight the Tribe Master, who happened to be her father. He ruthlessly attacked her regardless, and even several onlooking tribe members took part in the brutal beating. Her feathers were yanked out, her eyes gouged and face scarred, her own clawless paws horrifically marred.
As the Tribe Master exiled her nearly lifeless body, she fell towards the city below; a floating steam-powered town by the name of Atmos. She landed in the lap of a hapless elven inventor named Gabriel, who saw this opportunity to fine tune his skills.
Creating a special mask with crystalline eyes, he managed to partially restore R'ylu's vision. He also developed special gauntlets to hide her deformed paws and give her the claws she always desired, also made from crystal.
Though she has no plans to return to her tribe, and her fur is a permanent light shade of pink (with a bit of purple), she loves her new life as Gabriel's assistant. It's a life she's always wanted, and no one can ever take it from her.
This *beautiful* doodle piece of my character R'ylu was done by none other than thelostcause86 ! The rainbow colored pencils really complement the character's bubbly personality. :3
