Detail of a single cylinder Fairbanks-Morse engine at a municipal light plant in Texas. This engine still has the original hot-tube ignition.
What a beautiful chunk of American iron, with a glorious authentic patina from decades of use!
Note the odd shaped duct on the crankcase above the name, part of the induction air handling on this two-stroke engine. There is no blower; the crankcase is used to pump air into the cylinder.
The exhaust discharges through the curving pipe into an underground chamber. Notice the color coded piping :)

So, basically, this is like a giant version of a lawnmower engine, only without an ignition coil?
Scary!
Hehe.
Good thing about those is the mechanics are so simple it possibly, with a basic maintenance, works for years without a failure. Should be fun to hear that working "Boom. Boom. Boom." indeed

Interesting! There aren't a whole lot of these plants with reciprocating engines left, although ironically some new ones are being built.
Texass lost one plant in Presidio (replaced by a solar plant! booooooring!), but it is gaining one (from builder Wartsila) in Hidalgo.
Would like to see your pictures if you can post them :)
