"Do not worry for me, Alayne. The pain is long gone, and my spirit is still here to stay with you and Linea. My injury has not taken from my love for you. As long as both of you are still here with me, I will be happy, even like this. Our clan-mates are caring for me, bringing me food and water and keeping me company. So be strong, and don't let worry cloud your spirit when your family and your clan needs you to be able to focus and do your best."
We have already seen the Great Purist, Alayne, and his child, Linea. Here is Alayne's spirit partner, Raila; she was crippled in an attack on the Great Purist's clan and, though she lived through her injuries, she is partially paralyzed, and cannot move her lower limbs or tail. As a result, she cannot walk, and is mostly confined to her tent, except for when she is carried out to join in festivals and celebrations.
Even in an Elderist camp, this situation might be mirrored, as the bonds between spirit partners are extremely strong. Of course, few Purists will spare a thought that when Alayne took revenge and struck down the Elderist who crippled his spirit partner, that Elderist probably had a family of their own...
It is no light matter for Balloh to become spirit partners. Where the Malgraan often have short-lived relationships before they settle down and marry a partner to have children with, or simply find someone they wish to stay with long-term, the Balloh have a number of very close friends in their clan but will usually choose only one to become their spirit partner. Of course, the process of 'choosing' is more a spur-of-the-moment thing; the names may be different between races, but the concept of love is one that is universal. Eventually the feelings between two close friends will become something more, and if the two intimate partners touch spirits for an extended period of time, they will become spirit partners.
Spirit partners have a special connection and are better able to sense the presence and emotions of their partner, and understand them as well. But on the downside, this connection cannot be broken, and being separated for extended periods will cause unease. And when one half of the pairing dies, it can cause a lot of distress to the survivor, which is a primary reason that Balloh almost exclusively take partners from within their own age range. There have been exceptions, of course, including a few, very rare emigrant Balloh who have taken Malgraan as their partners, knowing from the outset that they are going to outlive them.
Characters and species are mine.

Hard to say. Their homeworld only has 10% surface land mass - the rest of it is water, 75% of which is frozen. Each individual camp is comparatively small, a couple hundred at most, since they survive solely on hunting, both above and below the water surface.
Disclaimer: I'm not a sociologist and could be making some very incorrect assumptions.
The closest parallel to draw would be to native Americans (before Columbus's arrival), who lived a similar lifestyle. That would put their population on Vhanarr somewhere between 10 and 100 million - closer to the lower end of that scale, most certainly. 10,000,000 is probably a good upper bound. Assuming an even distribution of clans, that would put 2 million in each of the five clans - this is a simplification, however, as the distribution is going to most certainly not be even.
Emigrant Balloh make up less than 1% of the population on Malgraan planets. It would be in the 100,000s range on Malgaria, and probably the 10,000s range on the frontier worlds.
