Well, find a pic with the exact style you like (and I remember the artist you talked about!) and really observe how he or she did it. I think a lot of the realistic style comes from the colors and, especially the shading. You can look at someone else's work as an example. Try doing a really small piece and try to mimic the style!
Normally, I'd say that if you're just mimicking someone else, you're not being yourself, but you can definitely learn from trying his or her style!
