Because I miss when I really enjoyed Halo as a thing, have a Kig-Yar of mine!
March 18, 2560: Presumably, the addition of 'rebel' Kig-Yar to our ranks has been beneficial. We've seen a marked decrease in successful incursions on our reclaimed city in terms of brute activity. Since the naval battle was resolved, we've had a long campaign of rooting out scattered and regrouping Covenant forces. Among our non-human companions, I've noticed that a kig-yar by the name of Kol has proven valuable in reducing casualties both offensively and defensively. How exactly one uses a jetpack and Carbine in conjunction with a shield gauntlet so successfully is beyond me, but he insists that his 'mask' does most of the aiming for him. Part of me wants to believe that, but his aim with a Battle Rifle isn't half bad either when he takes his off time at the range.

Presumably it functions like the Combat Lenses, with the heads up display and whatnot. Optics probably are better than the lenses, with higher magnification, infrared or heat optics and whatnot.
Don't recall my outdated canon very well (considering the modern stuff is even less scifi than the original), but if there are neural implants those could coordinate with the motor cortex, feeding the visual information more efficiently.

Really, it was implied through old books that have since been declared noncanon. One of the books that happens before halo 1 takes place on an asteroid colony of jackals and humans living hidden from the unsc and covenant, for instance. This book describes jackals as unwilling participants who lost the war for their continued freedom agains the covenant.
Presumably, post schism, the kig-yar aren't as well suppressed without the elites and their navy.
