I always get anxious when people ask me digital art questions.
To be honest i just swap the brush mode back and forth between "darken" and "lighten" and mess with the opacity.
I'm coming at this from a traditional mindset, so I'm probably not explaining it correctly.
tl;dr I do one thing then try a different one.
