Yep, those split-windows had crap brakes. VW didn't figure out that a one-ton truck actually needed brakes until the 1970 model (and it wasn't until 1977 that it occurred to them that it would be nice if they could go highway speeds). Before that, it took bulky Teutonic weightlifter legs to bring it to a stop. Did Rosco ever get into comics? Now S. Clay Wilson can't draw at all. Entropy sucks.
in 69 i turned 21 in the air force, b'cause that was the only way i could avoid being drafted into the army. it wasn't until the late 70s that i discovered the herb scene for myself, when it was up in oregon, after it was pretty much in the process of abondoning the sf bay area. i did have mr natural and fat freddy's cat. the bizerkly barb and the people's park. but mostly i didn't see much of the cities cause i grew up in the hills of the northern sierras away from them.
people think it was all about being stoned, because that's what media wanted people to think, to discredit social consciounse because that was inconvenient to the corporatocracy.
and of course that backfired, because, hay, what college or high school kid, wouldn't want to party.
my first car was a chevy van, i got through the credit union when i was in the air force. even my dad didn't have a car until the year i graduated high school, in 66.
so i remember those times, only somewhat differently then like this, they tend to be characterized.
the real heroes went to jail to win civil rights and peace.
