I was going to stream this evening, but I have a bit of a headache, so I decided to just doodle quietly instead. This is an experimental piece, and I'm not sure if I'm going to try and finish it or not. I hate drawing backgrounds. They're hard. Hence, I need to practice this shit more. I'm no good at coming up with stuff out of my head and getting it to look right, so I took several photos I snapped at the Chicago Botanical Gardens a few weeks ago, and composited them in GIMP. I printed out the resulting scene after I'd edited my photos the way I wanted them, and then traced over the result and added a figure for balance and interest.

My hand hurts now, but the pic I got out of this is interesting. I can definitely tell where I lost patience trying to render all the plants in the background. The technique certainly works, and I don't mind the tracing in this case since I took the photographs I was using as references. Might look interesting in inks, but I don't think I have the brainpower to do that tonight.

Thematically, the feel I was going for was kind of Zanny on Yavin IV. Yes. I am a dork.
