I'm gonna side with #2!
I do believe that looking -too- similar can be a problem in making something distinguishable, and while I also get that you might have a hard time becoming attached to something that's too different, I believe with enough care, love, and attention, you might not even have to worry about that and naturally grow fond of this alter-Smiley!
Plus, I'm... honestly very fond of browns and creams, myself.

I like the alternate a universe idea. I'd go with #2 because of the color difference.
(I'm betraying my own blueness!)
It is a bit more difficult to become attached to an unfamiliar character, but it shouldn't be impossible. :3

I dunno, they're both really cute. Maybe we can get more detail concerning its personality?

I like the fur markings of #2 better, but I like the color scheme of #1 more, so it's kind of a toss-up between the two. Perhaps a combination of those features might work?
