This is a very early concept design I came across from the very early 1990's. I had just seriously discovered anime and it having a major effect on my concept design and world-building work at the time. For a space-only craft there really no good reason for streamlining except it looks cool, and combining streamline parts with chunks of heavy industrial bits can give an interesting appearance.
This was suppose an in-system interceptor that has no Faster than light capability to it. Its main weapon is a large rail-gun with some backup weapon systems. The craft was suppose to have no antigrav on board so the occupants had to remain in their custom G-couches during acceleration. Sorry if type is hard to read but top sketch was real tiny and it is a very old piece from me!

both versions are very interesting, though for a main weapon that large, I'd have expected more of a spinal mount design with the ship built around the gun. That would tend to give the ship's reason for being a bit more protection if the fighter is hit, though the external mounting is easier to replace assuming the ship comes back with a damaged weapon.
Makes me think about "Ikaruga", never played that game, but the spacecraft is very similar to this one, just yours is more modern lookin ( http://cowboy.ikaruga.co.uk/bestgameever.jpg )
Anime spacecraft almost always got a railshooter as weapon, i did the "Gley Lancer" some days ago too and has a railgun too, but tat can be "hide" under the ship when not used

There is one possible use for having a design being "pseudo-streamlined" so to speak (i.e. design elements that appear to be streamlining but serve another purpose). In this case that of angling the plates for deflection of projectiles. Of course, at the energies a space-based weapons system is hucking around you're not going to be doing much deflection, but it IS a thought...
