I see they added some old fashioned air purifiers

I think the last significant update were in the 1980s, so the technology was definitely dated by the end of operations. From what I understand, many of their attempts at pollution controls worked very poorly.

Doh! Silly me :) Those would be the most effective of their attempts, but I don't think they'd survive the temperatures up there for long.

Last update in the 80s and unless they were pushed into it I doubt they put any more than they had to on any of the systems. Pollution controls especially add in the odds or getting a waver

None of the big US steel companies seemed to want to evolve until competition forced it. Now global competition has largely forced them out of business!

BSC was apparently under a lot of pressure to clean up because of their proximity to downtown Bethlehem and its businesses and LAW AND DOCTOR'S OFFICES. I don't think they ever did it because they thought it was the right thing to do. The irony is that all those "important people" fled to the suburbs years ago :|

On the other hand, I see these big "modern" multinational companies with their "statements of environmental sustainability" and I question whether they really believe in it. Sometimes it just looks to me like a bunch of babblespeak added to appease special interest groups and allow them to issue press releases.

Well historically speaking they don;t upgrade/ repair/ replace anything until
1> it no longer works
2> they are paid or given tax breaks to do so
3> mandated by law then they will fight it legally and still drag thier feet doing so
