Endless Realms player race - Ulvar Kyr (male)
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
When we were going over all the possibilities for types of races that would make up the core races of the game, I noticed a glaring lack of any "huge tough" races - the most physically intimidating race at the time was human, believe it or not. Not just because I'm a personal fan of such races, I insisted the development team would be making a huge mistake if they didn't include at least one player race in the line of ogre, dragonborn, charr or tauren. I also figured it would be a great time to also make a beast-race, thinking the concepts go well together, and the developers wouldn't have to worry about covering those two bases with the other races. At the time, it may have been the only beast-race to make it into the final cut, although in the end, five of the nine core races ended up being "furry" :V
So this is a race that I essentially got to design entirely myself, aside from general species inspiration (I suggested alternative inspirational species, like turtles, armadillos, ankylosaurs, vultures, cervines...) - although there were lots of potentially cool things to pick from, we settled on canines and ursines being the primary inspiration for look. However, as I developed them, I also feel a bit of big cat/smilodon, wolverine and yeti made it in as well, which I really only see as a good thing :b
So yeah. Technically, these guys have tails and ears that make them look rather wolflike, but they're the sort of guys that chop stuff like that off because they are (or used to be) liabilities in fights. Admittedly, this was inspired by a myriad of dog breeds, but most notably the ovcharka, the breed Casey and I want to get eventually - originally bred to defend villages from wolves, bears, and tigers, they have their ears chopped off so predators have one less thing to rip or grab later :b

Ironically, right now I'm playing someone who's TERRIFIED of werewolves :b Kinda started as an inside joke about me being a real life werewolf 'cause of my inexplicable skill at destroying whatever bed I'm sleeping in, but yeah, character erroneously believes werewolves ate her family when she was a kid and thinks she's a werewolf herself (she's not, although she sleepwalks) :V
It hasn't really come up yet in game, although we have a ranger who was thinking about finding a wolf animal companion (my character has a chance to suffer the "Shaken" status effect if she fails a Will save around canines, 'cause they're really upsetting to her :b) so it might come up soon... :V
Hey, thank you very much! It's appreciated :) Yeah, I'm not sure how much he'd like actually being ridden around on, but I think they're pretty loyal with their allies/best buds, he might put up with it if he liked you enough ;) But yeah, battle partner? For sure. When he wasn't being an awesome survivalist helping you not totally die out at the top of a desolate snowy mountain, he'd be barbarian-raging/Hulking out all over your enemies :D
lol, the female might be a little while, but I can tell you they aren't quite as burly as the males, and a bit more classically proportioned rather than being especially top-heavy. Ulvar Kyr are maybe the most sexually dimorphic race, although both genders are equally as tough and warrior-like. Just the males are more straight up "tank and spank" brute strength fighters, while females are faster and more agile skill fighters but still actually quite powerful. You can see my original concept for the male vs female Ulvar here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/15375176/
Hehe, yeah, I'm a fan of him :3 I think he has a bit of a smilodon/big cat look to him, too, and badger/wolverine, so hopefully he appeals to a number of animal fans.
Also, conveniently enough, not that he's representative of everyone who's not a furry, but I have a friend who's pretty anti-furry (or at least, in the popular camp of "Well, maybe if I'm trying to be fair furries aren't as retarded as we make them out to be... but it's funnier to just assume they're all broken spergs"), so when the art director asked him what he thought of our race lineup, we were a bit surprised when he actually only disliked two of the races (the bunnygirls and the weaselfolk) - I thought for sure he'd hate these guys, too, but he said they didn't just feel like a big wolf-furry, that he got a kind of yeti/arctic beast-feel from him, and thus didn't mind at all. *shrugs*

I'll be reposting http://www.furaffinity.net/view/15375176/ with the races complete, but since it's not terribly visible on the preview and I haven't posted the updated height chart yet, I'll just tell you that they're around 7 feet in height :b
*chuckles* Casey and I have already decided that when/if we get an ovcharka, we won't be having our puppy's ears cropped, even though it's the "proper" thing to do with the breed (like chopping off rottweiler tails, another breed we're interested in).
But yeah, these guys do it to themselves by choice - it's seen as both practical and a show of toughness. Kind of like the myriad of manhood trials you can find around the world - like there's one where the hopeful man has to stick his arms into, essentially, fire ant nests for an extended period of time, and if he makes a sound or makes a face or withdraws before he's allowed, he fails :b He's not considered an adult and a man until he can do it.
So yeah, I chose something like voluntary ritual maiming as a show of what kind of people the Ulvar Kyr are :b Only the tough survive, so if you're too much of a baby to chop your ears and tail off, which only get in the way of combat, well...
Although I'm sure there are plenty of individuals who DON'T undergo the ritual - they aren't fighters/warriors, they're pariahs or exiles, they think having protruding ears and tails help them more in battle than hinder them, or they just want to stick it to the man :V

It's a good point - to be honest, I think some clans of Ulvar care less or more than others. Their lore isn't super developed yet, but as of now, they're roughly split between a slightly more "civilized"/stable/liberal (a larger, more modern clan, the one most likely to have the most dealings with the other races), and many smaller clans that are still warring amongst each other, and probably a bit more traditional (although I'm sure they vary a bit).
But the point, really, is that the Ulvar generally wouldn't see a reason to NOT chop off their ears unless they're too cowardly or vain, or just really "different" from the rest of them. You wouldn't be outright exiled necessarily, but it probably wouldn't win you any points with a lot of them. As I said, though, I think some Ulvar wouldn't care as much, but others definitely would.

Hehe, I loooove gentle giant characters <3 I think these guys are pretty stoic most of the time, but since they kind of come from a harsh eat-or-be-eaten survivalist history, a side-effect of that is that they're really quite loyal to the people who've earned it, work well individually or with others, and probably know how to make the most of precious down-time and enjoy what they can.
Like beating up helpless http://www.furaffinity.net/view/15468215/ and eating http://www.furaffinity.net/view/15121128/ !!
Yeah I saw that, Ulvar Kyr! There's no denying it! I even have you on video! I - oh crap here he comes!

XD Definitely can see them as the type to crush man's skull like sparrow egg between thighs :V

I can see the females being like that, too. Hmm, actually... Maybe, especially the females XD

lol, sorta! Just all the other races at the time were either shorter, or really slender. But yeah, it bothered me, too, which is why I insisted we do something about it :b
Now that the races have all be finalized, the lizard people (Silean) and these wolfbear guys (Ulvar Kyr) are both bigger/stronger than humans.
