Back-story: She was found as an orphan in the streets at the age of thirteen in the fire nation capital, she was caught stealing food from a stand and was about to be arrested by the guards, luckily for her the queen was there for she was greeting the people and happen to noticed Alyssa there struggling against the guards grip as she was been lead away. She motioned the guards to stop and took a good look at her. Queen Maria asked her what was her name, she said Alyssa, the queen then says: You are to be taken to the palace and your are to be my royal aid.
Alyssa was in shock at the words the queen had just said. First she thought she was to be thrown in prison and put to the chopping block, but now this dragon came and out of nowhere and was giving her a second chance at life. The guards and the queen led her to the palace, through the front doors and later in the throne room where King Marik was conversing with his advisor when he glanced up and saw his queen with a green colored dragon walking beside her.

The advisor disgusted by this that such a street urchin would be allowed on palace grounds.

She knelt down and motioned alyssa to do the same.

Marik: My queen who is this you have brought before me?

Maria: My king I present to you my new aid: Lady Alyssa.

Marik: I see..... How is it you two came to be?

Maria: I saw her being taken by two guards and I decided to help her.

Marik: I see..... Lady Alyssa come forward.

Alyssa nervously got up and stepped forward.

Marik: By order of the king you are to be my wife's handmaiden. You are to serve her and aid her with whatever she says. Welcome to the family.

Alyssa: You are too kind your highness.

For the next nine years Alyssa tended to the queen and assisted her with her everyday needs.

Then two months into her ninth year serving the queen, Alyssa and the queen had a private discussion.
Maria: Lady Alyssa.

Alyssa: Yes my queen.

Maria I am with child and in seven months will sire a son to the king.

Alyssa shocked, yet gladdened by the news: That's wonderful news your majesty.

Maria: Now what I am going to ask of you must absolutely obey, you understand?

Alyssa: Yes my queen.

Maria: Should anything befall me and the king you are to take the child as your own and raise it like your own son.

Alyssa: I shall not fail you my queen.

Seven months later the child was born, but he had a birth defect: he didn't have any wings, and he didn't cry. The king later went to light dragon temple in the capital square and begged the light dragons for his son life. Upon hearing his plea they agreed to his request and granted his son life.

The king and queen along with alyssa raised drake for three years and enjoyed every day of it.

Then the king and queen had a private discussion with lady alyssa, the kings advisor
was nowhere to be found.

Marik: Lady Alyssa, have your ever heard of the legend of the Dragonmaster?

Alyssa: No your highness.

Marik: You see every 500 years The light dragons choose a dragon from one of the five elements gets the light element plus the ability to learn all the other elements too.

Also it is the dragon master's responsibility to keep the world in balance and help keep the peace.

Alyssa: I see.

Maria: It seems that the light dragons have chosen drake to be the next one.

Marik: Maria has told me about whatever should happen to us that you are take drake as your son has she not?

Alyssa: Yes she has your majesty.

Marik: I have another request for you to add upon your mission t the queen.

Alyssa: And what would that be?

Marik: Take our son to the fire temple at the foot of Mount Dracon and have the monks train him there, so that he may be prepared to face what the world throws at him

Alyssa: I shall do what you say my king.

Marik: Very good.

The king then calls his captain of the guard in.

Captain of the guard: Yes my king?

Marik: Are the shadow dragons any close to summoning their dark master yet?

Captain of the guard: Not yet my king but they are getting very close.

Marik: Very well have all guards and soldiers keep watch.

Captain of the guard: Yes my king.

Later that night the advisor returned to the palace and was creeping towards the royal chambers of the king and queen. Then he murdered them in their sleep and then proceeded to the young prince's nursery, where he laid in his bed. As he was just about to murder him a bright light erupted from the prince and the advisor shrieked in pain This awoke lady Alyssa from her sleep since her room was right next to the prince's room. She ran up and went to the nursery and found the advisor and writhing in pain and the child crying. Quickly remembering her promise made to the king and queen, she whisked the baby away and ran away with him to the fire temple. For the next twenty years she and drake lived at the temple.

She taught him all the basics things in life and also help attend to the temples cooking and cleaning.

Until the day came for drake to claim his destiny.
