All artistic liberty projects have to start some place, usually a gender, a species, a color and a personally.
For this one the starting criteria I was given was to use that particular teal fur, make a kirin, and make it look good with the coat.
With the ground work set in place I spoke of what we could do in terms of colors and design, I then took the photo she gave me of her in the coat and drew over it.
When I send artwork for an artistic liberty project it is always a basic plan, the whole point of artistic liberty is for the project to have the freedom to do what works best or just plain "feels" right in the end.... and in the end I made some changes from "the basic plan" (and found that green does not airbrush over this teal so well as I did want the stripes a bit more prominent but any darker and I get black)
Overall I MUCH prefer artistic liberty projects, A LOT of the stress of commission work actually comes from re-creating a set design, getting the shape and markings of a commission exact to a reference sheet is very stressful and time consuming compared to artistic liberty work, having the freedom to allow the creation to become what it wants to be as I work however is very blissful, even more blissful when it is fantasy work because then all the stress is eliminated as I do not even have to meet an an actual animal's shape (a kirin needs to be horse/deer like but not exactly shaped like a deer/horse)
I am pretty much always open for artistic liberty fantasy creatures, if interested email me at thebeastcub[at]gmail.com
At the moment I would really love to find someone to get a "Cosmic Stag" made with a navy blue based orange tipped fur and solid navy blue, it would have some white spots to symbolize stars and I overall want to go for a very imposing, handsome, stoic, ethereal look.
