Not a lot of these stores around anymore. This one is in Newark, De and caters mostly to University of Delaware students. In fact you'll find a lot of UD merchandise here. Its their bread and butter.
I've always loved that sign and the stainless steel display windows full of what they have on offer. Its a very welcoming entrance-way. Inside is mostly original too, with a lot of 1950's detail. Even has the old upstairs office that looked out over the store. Front is a bit plain unfortunately. It lacks a lot of the art deco detail these buildings usually had.
The coffee shop next door is pretty nice too. It has an absolutely beautiful oak counter, and is one of the original coffee shops here, with a very 1970's beatnik/intellectual atmosphere. And upstairs is another small-town staple, the town tailor. In the old days you could do all of your shopping and errands on Main St.

There were two 5 & 10 stores over here. One was named Kreesges (sp?). One of the stores always had great toys; museum-quality solid plastic dinosaurs and packs of accurate reproductions of Confederate money. There was even a corner of one of the stores where there were small animals to be bought as pets. Loved those stores.
Thanks for reawakening those wonderful memories for me, Timid.
