I have been wanting to do this song for a long time now. So, I taught it to myself and recorded it all in one night. Finding the lyrics was a bit difficult since this band is indie as fuck (the original recording was done in a barn) but someone with a really good ear for lyrics put down a pretty good transcription in the youtube comments of the original so I was able to have something to work from. It is a really touching and very sad song if you can glean the meaning from the lyrics. It's a song about the needless taking of life, the destruction of natural beauty and the arrogance and interference of man in the face of nature.
This also gave me the chance to do recording work with a pretty cool guitar. I was given a vintage Lyle Hummingbird copy a few months ago by an appreciative client. The thing had seen a lot of repair work, modification and play. I did a setup on it for the guy and when he came to pick his guitars up he just handed it back to me and said, "here, you said you liked it." So, now this Old 60s Lyle 630-L just hangs out next to my bed.
I tried some experimentation with panning on this one. I have usually mixed the vocals dead center in most of my recordings but it somehow seemed wrong to do in this recording. Vocals are panned hard left, guitar hard right.
Vocals recorded on a Rode NT1A, guitar on a mxl 603
Chords: A-, C, G
Lyrics:
"Egyptians hold kisses in waves
Letting go of everything that Id like to save
Your hand still drifts up my sleeve
Maroon blue dress pressing leaves
Draw me still
Draw me still
Three men stood in a clearing
Staring at a wild white heron
sunglasses a gun and a pen
What you take away, you can't give back again
Draw me still
Draw me still
Broken wings wont bring you home
Soft white tendons long hollow bone
You hung those feathers from your ceiling
So the women you bring home lay down loud
Mothers are made for returning
And the women you bring home lay down loud"
