It's time to get funky with some of the most famous songs from Tower of Power!
What Is Hip
You're Still A Young Man
Down To The Nightclub
Us trombones had some fun soli lines in here, but I'm especially grateful that we had a trumpet player that could pull off the solo lines. (I'm also really pleased that we were able to get all nine of us bones to sound like one player).
The first few rehearsals of this were... interesting, to say the least. Trying to get a concert band to play funk was a challenge, but I feel that we managed it well.

Gah...i miss playing Tower of Power with my Jazz Combo groups...brings me back to the good ole days...now i wanna pull out some of the old stuff and hit it again!
sounds great for a concert band. not quite as sharp as it could be, but thats what happens when you take funk to a larger ensemble. overall sounds great though. thanks for sharing!

I do agree that it doesn't quite groove as much as the original. It's a little too much on top of the beat, and funk really should lay back pretty hard - that can be a hard concept to explain to musicians who haven't played jazz much (or at all). And having that many people does mean that notes can get a bit blurred if you aren't careful.
