Probably because it was a fusion of two genetically identifiable beings. They couldn't decide if Stevonnie was a he, she, herm, or transgender. Biggest cause of "confused boners."
With Opal and Sugilite, you had two fusions that, even though their bodies are illusions, are obviously female.

I saw Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jay Q at MAGfest this past weekend and they specifically made sure to not use "he/she/her/him" terms when the character was referred to in third person.
I'm expecting the R34 community to schism itself over Stevonnie's gender if it hasn't already. But really, any interpretation of them going forward will technically be correct.
For now though...this is the best one out there

Haha I just watched that episode last night (Well, I missed a lot of it. I tuned into when you see her go buy some donuts). Yeah, she was really pretty. I wasn't entirely sure what going on and I was assuming that Steven turned into a girl from some weird magic. But yeah, really nice fan art of her, she looks great (not surprising lol).
I don't watch this show, but thanks to artists, I'm familiar with the characters.
But when this episode popped up, suddenly its Stevonnie, Stevonnie everywhere.
I had to look up pictures of Steven and Connie just to see who this was a combination of.
That's when I discovered that images of Connie were suddenly much more difficult to come by compared to this.
Poor Connie, being dwarfed by a gender fusion.........but a fair bit of Steve did her some goooood.
Even if this doesn't last, we could assume that's what their daughter might look like in 25 years or so.
But when this episode popped up, suddenly its Stevonnie, Stevonnie everywhere.
