It's due to a gene responsible of the inhibition of growing: In lions, this gene is in females, and in tigers, in the males, for that reason, a liger doesn't inherit those genes and becomes HUGE, whereas a Tigon inherits the double and is quite small (compared with tigers and lions, I wanna say).
It is actually hot to some lions and tigers go do get along when they're not territorial and mate when their instincts kick in. Although I always thought to get those breeds they would have to do surgery or some sort but I guess I was wrong after looking some youtube videos. They are pretty awesome animals.
