In concept, design, power creep etc. i have to agree, it can be said they are running out of ideas. but this is a small consolation http://www.deviantart.com/art/Bad-god-411147011
Power creep occurs mostly in mmo's expansion, to increase appeal, they make the gear stronger or add more levels, this is fine at first, but with each expansion it gets stacked. Eventually it gets to the point where the original stuff is useless, and people who haven't been playing in a while, can no longer compete, especially in pvp. Unfortunately this unavoidable for mmo's, servers are expensive to maintain so they need to meet costs, the games is free to play but has premium stuff which costs money, witch helps. But that is pointless without thousands to hundreds of thousands of players, to keep and get more the need content to keep them interested, thus the eternal battle for more content. To ensure they play use the content, they have to make it more interesting then the old content, ie stronger stuff, while successful in the short run, it its-own final boss in the long run.

I don't know that I will have the opportunity to watch that video, but I definitely know what you're talking about. However, I think that it can be completely balanced to prevent any damaging effects, with the level cap being used as a measure to keep that balance. For example, in WoW, PvP brackets were separated by level, and back in the day PvP gave no experience. When Burning Crusade came out, I think you could have stayed level 60 (the old cap) and continued to PvP in your own bracket, and still have the best gear possible for your level, since all the new gear was in a higher level bracket. Of course, I may be wrong. Maybe they added 61+ to the bracket containing level 60s, but if they didn't, then the power creep has no effect on the PvP scene of those players except the drain in numbers of level 60s as people choose to level up those characters.
:3 A well-designed game can incorporate expansions that have no adverse effect on the original content. Another problem that eventually does arise, though, is another one WoW encountered (Its age makes it a great model.): After enough time adding entirely independant, higher level content, the sheer volume of content becomes a barrier to those who want new characters or start playing later in the game's life. WoW addressed this by offering experience boosts and instant level boosts as micro transactions. I actually prefer the level boost approach, because it doesn't cheapen the leveling experience for those who actually want to experience the whole game rather than skip ahead to play with their high level friends and/or experience the newest content; I tried playing WoW with the triple xp boost from their recruit-a-friend system, and while it was efficient and made leveling painless, it also made leveling thoughtless, made the easy intro quests even easier (by a wide margin), and meant a lot of hopping to new, far-away areas all the time, as we were constantly over-leveled. I feel like the friend I was playing with got no actual taste of what leveling and questing in WoW was intended to be like. Eh...
I think WoW has been thoroughly destroyed by now, though, so it's kind of a moot point.

And i have nothing to add to that, sorry. I never played WoW or any mmo for that matter, but half the mmo world is WoW and LoL went from thothing to over 35 million players worldwide in less than 5 years, so I cant judge. Your experience made me think of the first move advantage and its offset.
