Wonderful situation huh?

Apparently it's her bad luck to take this fall just as they're going to leave.

In al honesty I did not notice the little dust-cloud "poof" in the previous page, until I read this one.

Okay, that explains the poof I asked about in the last panel of the previous page. I guess some of the previous inhabitants were digging holes, too! At least now that she's caught in this oubliette, she's out of the sun for a while... but dinnertime's coming, too.

Actually, the island was originally just a flat little spit of sand. Sand was dredged for ship's access to the island and used to bury the fortifications. Sand can tolerate artillery much better than naked masonry or concrete. Some of the oldest galleries are centuries old and have crumbled badly, her particular hole's roof actually failed a while ago, and the compacted sands have only now caved in to the surface. That's why she landed on a sand pile instead of the roof debris.

Ouch!

I really, really like the shading in panel 2, I can almost taste the dust.
