Personality/Biography: Catherine was not always the sly, malicious pirate that she is now. In fact, she used to keep to herself quite a bit in the old port town she used to reside in. That was, until, she met a young captain just starting on her own journey. She fell in love with the idea of sailing free on the waters and gladly joined them on their journey throughout the seas. The captain she joined robbed, lied, and caused mischief all across the waves. Life could not seem to have been better or more adventurous for the timid lass. That was, until, the mutiny.
The crew did not take so kindly as to be under the direction of a woman, no matter how well she sailed. They stormed into the Captain’s Quarters where they both resided and restrained them. Without another word, they were cast into the violent sea below. With her hands and feet bound, she was unable to defend herself as she crashed hard into the side of the boat, knocking her unconscious.
She did not know how long she was left adrift before she was washed up onto the shore of a barely inhabited island. Catherine wandered for days along the shore before arriving at an unknown port town. There, she found work in the tavern, steadily learning the comings and goings of certain pirates. Figuring out who the regulars were and who seemed the most fearsome; and those that were not.
She calculated and planned in secrecy to overtake the ship of a no-name pirate captain. She wanted to feel the wind at her back and the spray of the sea on her face. But she needed someone she could rely on. One who could help her carry out her plans.
It was then when she set her sights onto a different regular, a scarlet macaw by the name of Edward Newbury. She had listened to his plight more than once; how he used to help as another captain’s first mate but he was abandoned in that town due to not being “tough.” She saw this as a wonderful opportunity. He gladly agreed, the deal sealed with a brief handshake and a swift swig of rum.
The night the pact was made, they crept aboard the ship with the only lighting being that of the moon above. A dirk was held tightly between her teeth as she scaled the side of the boat with her new companion not far below her. They silently landed on the deck, carefully avoiding the patrols with bated breath while making their way slowly towards the captain’s cabin.
The lock on the door was easy enough to get past, as it was not so ornate, and it opened with little sound. Slinking into the darkened room, she gripped the hilt of her blade in her hand until the black skin turned to grey from the intense grip. Her eyes fell onto the captain sleeping peacefully in his bed. The stench of alcohol was heavy around him and several bottles rolled gently across the floor from the mellow sway of the waves.
This was it. Her chance of having that chance of freedom again. To gain a ship and soon raise a crew beneath the heel of her boot. All she had to do was end this one, insignificant life. There was certainly no going back. She brought the dirk up above her head and she could feel her heart grow stone cold and hard as she brought it down into the man’s chest with a cry. The last of her innocence disappearing into the air of the night as he awoke with widened eyes and a scream of pain.
Clatters of the crew were heard outside, the clanging of weaponry growing ever louder as they approached. Edward panicked, his hands gripping his head with wide eyes, thinking they were definitely dead. Catherine merely smirked knowingly as she heaved the now motionless man into her arms with little effort. Her head held high, she walked onto the deck, past several shocked pirates, and into the ring of light caused by the newly lit torches held by the crew.
She coldly dropped the corpse onto the wood with a thunk and her dagger clearly protruding from his chest. Squaring away her shoulders and balling her hands into fists with a wrinkle along the bridge of her nose in a sneer, she barked out. “Your captain is dead by my hand! Join my crew or hit the land you mangy scraps of skin!”
A murmur rippled throughout the small crowd of men, obviously intimidated by the woman. Soon, all was silent before the obvious clang of a cutlass hitting the deck. One of the men turned tail, heading to the small ladder that lead down from the side of the boat to the dock. About half the crew began to follow suit as the others began to side with the newly appointed captain.
Catherine never felt so in power. So feared and revered by others. The siren song of the sea ultimately turning her into the calculating and cruel woman she was now. Nor does she regret her choices in life.
