Showing the process I go through to clean up the fur around the eyes.
I do most of my fur shaving before the fur gets glued to the head but the area around the eyes always needs a lot of work. Using a #10 shaving blade (1.5mm) I carefully taper the fur so it gets shorter as it gets closer to the eye hole. This is done by hovering the blade above the backing without touching it to leave the desired fur length... not getting it too short so the backing shows through. Its a painstakingly detail oriented process as if the blade goes too deep, it can ruin the entire head which would have to be completely started over. The way I make heads, I can't just pull the fur off and redo that piece.
Each eye takes about 20-30 minutes to clean up before the edges are airbrushed and the actual eyes installed.
The fur just above the eyes is actually fire engine red with maroon airbrushing over it just to break up the solid color of the darker Venetian Red fur. I've been experimenting with adding little details like that in monochromatic areas.
OK getting back to work.

This is the first time I've seen a how to with how the area around the eyes are handled and it is wonderful!! I have a base head started, but one of the major things I am worried about is the area around the eyes...how not to show frayed edges where the eyes are installed and how to handle the shaving in the area. So - I can not thank you enough for showing us how you do it! <3
