He comes from a secret place. A place safe from hate and harm. So began the weekly TV series, Beauty and the Beast, a modern re-telling of the French classic.
Vincent, a gentle hybrid half-man, half-lion, lives in an underground world of ancient tunnels and chambers that lay far beneath the foundations of a modern metropolis above it. Love pulls Vincent’s heart upward towards one living in our world.
Our world, where his monstrous visage would make Vincent a captive to be caged, or even perhaps killed, is a source of innocent fascination for him. Powerful, and at times as deadly ferocious as a lion, he is like a child in his innocent wonder of who and what we are, trapped as he is far below in his subterranean world of tapping pipes and the dull rumble of subway trains far over-head.
I loved the TV series and recently have begun to watch it again on DVD. This is an “inked” drawing of Vincent, the central character. If you were lucky enough to see and enjoy the series, I hope this portrait brings back pleasant memories for you.

Way back when I first came up with the idea of my lion fursona -- and that was YEARS ago, I thought I was the only person who would evern think of such a fantastical creature. I was wrong. Okay, a drawn lion character wasn't that much of a stretch, but enough so that I felt alone and somewhat unique.
But when i saw Vincent for the first time on the television screen, my heart actually skipped several beats and I forgot to breath for several long seconds. That was Lionus, as true to how I imagined him being in reality to be. I faithfully watched every episode after that.
I was, and still am so taken with how Vincent and Lionus could be the same person/creature that I will NEVER EVER go to New York's Central Park. I won't go there because I don't want to find out that there isn't a gate there that is one of the many entrances to the world Below. Until some foul proof comes before me I will always believe in my heart that the no-longer-used gate is there and on the other side of it is a world safe from hurt and harm, where there lives a wonderful lionman named Vincent.

Thank you. I like doing art that reminds us of the movies or from television that most of us enjoyed.
Thank you, Sanjuroo, for the nice compliment re my artwork. I try.
Yes, because Vincent's mane is so luxurious and it's really the first thing you notice about him, I touched it up with those highlights. I think it also helps kead the eye travel back to the light at the end of one of the tunnels; one of the series' trademark scenes.

I humbly suggest that you set aside a regular time each week and watch just one episode each week, or one every other night, so that you'll get the flavor of Below. I was fascinated by the place and the characters living down there.
Vincent, the Tunnels and all the people Below were the only thing that prompted me to ever write an entire story that I completed. My notes, garnered from the series, and the two pocket novels that were published from the series are quite extensive.
Can you tell I'm still a rabid fan?

I remember seeing some of the episodes as a kid here. the script could have used a bit more sense, or so I thought. might have been because I not always had time to wacth the show. I also thought Vincents muzzle was too short to look right... :) could have used a bit more 'nose'.
one of the handful of stylish, not-too-overly relying on badly choreographed CGI tricks series from the past out TV stations will probably never repeat again. and if so, most likely with the episodes out of order. happened with "The Gargoyles" and a couple others, too.

I'm afraid that CGI back then was not up to the task, nor were any believable facial prostetics. Today? I think it might be different and so I continue to hope. If I can't see Vincent again, then maybe a CGI lionman (done as well as Jar-Jar Binks) with a deep slightly gravelly voice. But until then, I will always love the television series and the wonderous place it took me to and people I met there.
He did, Kumbartha. If you ever get the chance to see at least one episode in the original English, try to catch it. Much of Vincent's character comes through in the original actor's voice and only partially in the words he speaks.
And yes, he possessed the wisdom that I think only a person who has been forced by circumstances to forever be outside of society can have. And it was with that wisdom that he would perhaps give you the impression he was looking into your soul; not out of any hurtful reason, but with kindness and understanding.

I know of the series. When it was on, orginally, I was much too young to appreciate the concept behind it, so I never watched it. I wish I could watch it on DVD, just to see what I missed, but I already have a list, a mile long of boxed sets I'd like to get my paws on. That's not to say your drawing doesn't make it very tempting. He looks very fierce, but at the same time, there is something really child-like about his eyes. I can almost hear him asking his human friend,
"But why is it this way?", the ultimate child's question.

You are incredible, Serath! That is just the kind of question he would of the man who raised him. Vincent would see the incredible wealth and material riches of the Above world, see men fighting and killing to possess more than they could use or enjoy and ask exactly that question.
In comparing the two stories, the major difference is that in Phantom the "villain" (or tragic hero is you prefer) takes Christine down into the catacombs against her will and intends to keep her as his prisoner. In the TV B&tB series, Catherine is brought Below to save her life after an attack on her and then returned to the Abovd world when she is healed. Both stories are similar in that they deal with the tragedy of an unfeature-lucky individual being rejected because of their being ugly with love finally bridging the gap.
Same here. I was listening to it as I "inked" this drawing of him.
Heh, I was even a member of a B&tB fan club and resident "expert" regarding the series' characters and locations where I worked. There were fans there as well. Heh, on the mornings after every episode we would all gather together and discuss the story -- and unabashedly admit to loving Vincent. Yeah, Catherine was okay, but we all knew that she wasn't as devoted to him as any of us were. :-D

I never think of Ron Perlman when I think of Vincent - though Ron is an excellent actor (in quite a few films; Enemy at the Gates and Name of the Rose for two in my DVD collection). When it comes to Vincent ... well then it's Ron that is the fictional character and Vincent who is real to me.
*laughs* Yeah, Vincent and me go way back. Best buddys and all that. Especially after one time when I got lot in the lower galleries of the Tunnels for two days and ... well that's another story.
Kind, gentle, strong, He and Kage (of "Ghost Warrior") are what I consider the prototype of what a true anthropomorphic should be.

*recoils with horror!* Me tell a story??? Well .... well, give me some to change some of the place names and ... well make it seem as though it's just a fictional story. Can't have anyone identifying a place or a name and then start putting two and two together now can we?
I thought the costume was extremely well done. I know that they could have done better (look at what Jim Henson was able to do with muppets of all sizes, that was a man who would find a way to do the impossible), but I'm certainly not complaining. Vincent was the reason why I watched the series. I loved the library and the entire world down below the surface world. I think my second favorite character would have to be Mouse.
I agree, Rabbit_Chaser, B&tB was a wonderful series and Ron Perlman made Vincent a memorable character -- character heck, a wonderful person. While the Below sets were due to budgetary considerations limited, they were still fascinating. The different chambers and the hints of lower levels. As I understood from what I read in fanzines and publicity releases from Ron Koslow, the Tunnels ran for hundreds of miles. There was even a suggestion that in later episodes there might have been contact with other (un-human?) below-surface dwellers.
*grinning* Yes, Mouse was a really nice character, "Okay fine". Meeting him and others sort of made you feel as though there was a place for you down there too.

Thank you, Stephenc.
B&tB was the only television show that absolutely nothing got in the way of me watching. A loving and caring secret world "save from hate and harm" where there was someone powerful, but gentle, kind and understanding. *sigh* Vincent was (and still is for me) the prefect friend, big brother, pal and just about anything else you might imagine. I even liked Catherine quite a bit -- except for that last season. But the last said about that the better.

I love Vincent!!!!!!!!!.. i grew up watching this show... I had the biggest crush on this character. When I was little would go bed and dream that a big strong lion type man would take my away to a under ground safe world where people loved and cared for each other. There is so much about this character to fall madly in love with. Wit, charm, grace, strength, elegant, intelligence.. an Ron Pearlmans voice.. so wonderful to listen to.
When I was young I was given the cassette... yes cassette, of "of love and hope" where Ron Pearlman read poetry as Vincent... "The first time, I loved forever.. is when you whisper my name. and I knew at once.. you loved me.. for the megar fool I am.. " (theme song lyrics)
ahooooo.. I need to get of my fan girl soap box now
“Soap box”? No way. Probably all us B&tB fans have our copies of “Love and Hope” to listen to and be sent back to that world Below.
Ever since the show I have had a desire/fear about visiting New York City and going to Central Park. Would that iron gate opening to the World Below be there, or not? Part of me is afraid that it would not be there … and part of me believes that just around that tree and behind that bush it would be. "Come in."
