I've been there too. I must say, the easy riser stairs were very unusual. And I loved how doors opened either to walls or to a drop XD

I have to wonder how many of those were intentional after the house opened to tours, to help sell the "WOW SHE WAS SUCH A KOOK" angle.

Some of the doors went into sections torn out after the 1906 earthquake and they were just boarded up and locked; others were a very clever way to hide gas lines , electrical panels and such from view, but that stuff was torn out to leave only the wall visible to add to the " she was a loon" factor.

The stair case to the ceiling went up into the hayloft but was abandoned when it was replaced by the easy risers but since it was part of a load bearing structure, it was left in place and simply closed off and sealed at the top.

and the interior doors that open into shafts, were used to clean the insides of the skylights and ventilation shafts that they were built into.
