Music in the Raw (WARNING: HUGE! NOT FURRY. OFF-TOPIC!)
Basoon reeds in the extreme raw.
This is just a little scrap. Makes a nice, neutral, but natural wallpaper.
Each section is split into four quarters then cut down to 120mm pieces. They're then gouged down to thickness, shaped to the appropriate shape, then profiled down to give them their contour. The cane is then soaked, folded, and wires are applied to give them the correct dimensions, and forced onto a mandrel to give them proper tube shape, and left to dry that way for two weeks. They're then wrapped with thread, sealed, clipped, and tuned... and then maybe I get to play on them. Assuming I didn't raucously fuck up somewhere along the way.
But at least they aren't 10-40 bucks apiece this way.

The very best traditionally comes from the southern part of France, but I've found that South American cane works really well. This particular batch came from South China, and I'm not really up on it yet, but reeds made from it have come highly, highly recommended, so I figured I'd give it a go. The Chinese grown cane is roughly a quarter as expensive as the French, so...
I might actually do a quick little scrap-post so the whole process can be illustrated: The tube, the split sections, the planed sections, the shaped sections, then the scrape and the final finish...
