The start of the otachi feet! These feet are HUGE. They are double the size of my own foot (which sounds insane, but my feet are size 2 in little kids....like batman velcro shoe small). These feet feature squishy foam DVC large raptor claws.
NOTE: I did make the outside tow smaller on purpose to be like a "pinky" toe, mostly for mobility purposes as the feet are so big, it will be easy for me to forget and bump that toe a lot.
This pic also shows how I make my feet.
1. Get some shoes or slippers
2. Sew in an extra velcro strap (make the velcro on the inside of the show, but on the outter side of the foot so someone can help you velcro up is needed. It's a lot harder for someone to reach around and attach a strap if the connection is on the inside..lesson learned from my dragon costume.). So basically, the velcro strap will be INSIDE the show. Soft fuzzy part sew to the inside of the shoe or slipper, but on outer side of the foot.
3. trace your foot onto an Eva foam floor pad
4. Draw in your toes and extra shape you want to bulk up your shoe.
5. Cut it out, flip it over, trace it and then cut that out so you have both feet. (if you want, write down what cut out goes with what foot, Right or Left. I'm dumb and I forget easy, so I ALWAYS have to write that sort of stuff down).
6. glue your shoe or slipper onto the foam base!
7. Foam the crap out of it to get the contours and shapes you want.
8. I then duct tape the whole structure as it makes the feet oh so durable. I made my dragon costume feet using this method and I'm 100% convinced they can take a beating.
9. Depending on how you want to do it, you can either add claws before or after you put your top layer (fabric or whatever) on top. For Otachi'd feet, I had to add the claws BEFORE the final layer (that layer everyone will see in the final product). I normally add the claws after the final layer. I add the claws by taking a fresh, sharp box cutter type blade and I make an incision into the toe where I want the claw to go. Make sure you cut into the foam a little bit to, no just the duct tape layer. I then put a dab of hot glue on the butt end of the claw and show it into the incision. Bonus of doing the claws after the final layer is you end up with a clean look and a sort of cuticle type look, vs. bonus of doing the claws before the final layer is that you can then seal around the claw itself if they claws might be bumping stuff. The difficult part of adding the claws first is that then you have to add your finals layer AROUND the claws vs. just shoving the claws right through.
BAM!
FEET!
