Digital fur tutorial for SAI
My friend asked me some time ago if I could do a fur tutorial, on how i do fur. I forgot about it, but suddenly remembered it again. So I threw up a tutorial this morning real quick :)
I use Paint Tool SAI, and I'm not sure if this tutorial would work with other art programs.
I'm sorry if some of this doesn't make sense. I am not the best at explaining!
1. Make a new brush with the settings I put onto the image. The brush you should pick should be the one called 'Brush'. Choose your fur colour and use this brush to make base colour. I usually make the tips first by flickering on my tablet and then filling in colour in the middle.
2. Lock the layer (the button saying Preserve Opacity, above your layers) and use the airbrush tool, with its opacity on 20-30, to darken where the shading should be.
3. Unlock the layer and go back to your new brush. Choose a colour that's a bit darker than the base colour and flick onto your fur area. Do it until it looks somewhat similar to mine.
4. Now, with the same brush, but smaller size, pick a rather dark colour and paint up where you want your 'fluffs' to be. When you were doing the previous layer, you might be able to see where you want the fluffs to be. You draw these up now.
5. Now comes the fun step! Paint lightly where you want your shadows. Don't press too hard, as the colour would be too solid. Blend them carefully by pressing lightly and flicking. When the shadows have been put on, you can put on smaller highlights by doing the same where you want your light.
6. To finish off,I like to make two new layers above your fur, press Clipping Group on both of them and make one of them a multiply layer, the second one should be luminosity. On multiply, I take a darker colour of the base and use the airbrush (still on 20-30) to make the shadows deeper. On the luminosity layer, I take the base colour and go over the fur where I want it to be brighter.
You have now created your own fur!
If you use, I'd love to see what you made with it! And if you have any questions, feel free to ask :)
Hope this was helpful!
