I'm digging the semiotics here. I see the mercury-dragon as embodying the hazards of greed - it may be shiny, and it may even be useful, but if you're not carefully it's extremely toxic. It's also interesting to think about this as a subversion of D&D stuff in that same direction: people focus on what's between them and wealth (the dragon) without realizing that wealth itself (mercury-laden gems and metal) may be dangerous. Mercury used to be used for gold and silver mining, and it did just that: it made gold and silver that were dangerous to handle until you got the mercury out of them.
It is also a very pretty dragon, and we're all in favor of pretty dragons here.
