Airplane spotting is a lot like birdwatching. A really good birder can tell what it is just from the shape or the way it flies. Ditto for airplanes.

My brother identifies them by the sound. You can have three planes with the same engines, but if he's heard 'em before, he'll tell you which is which.

Yes, as the airframe influences how the sounds emit. That and the propellor (a lot of an airplane's noise comes off the prop churning the air, the P-51 and Spitfire have the same engine, but different props and very different sounds) However, some engine+airframes are trickier, like like F6F, F4U and F7F with the un-turbo'ed R2800. Then it is the engine that is most distinctive.
