Pierre and the dragon part 2
The four find themselves lying on a hard floor. Pierre gets to his feet, rubbing the back of his head and gasping in pain.
“You ok?” Jacobi asks, helping him to his feet.
“Nothing broken,” Pierre answers, brushing himself down. “Where are we?”
The place where they stand is vast and dark. Nearby was what looked like a huge sign, but it was covered in thick grime and the text was unreadable. Jacobi wipes it with one of his huge claws.
“The Gateway to the Greatest realms of the Known Universe.” the title read and below it; “Wander through the Enchanted, the Bizarre, the Overwhelming, the Gift shop on your way out, the Frightening and the Awe Inspiring. What are you doing here standing and reading? Get going!”
“They really let the place go.” Jacobi comments looking around. There were purple curtains heavy with cobwebs and dust in the centre. He takes a hold of the nearest curtain and pulls. The curtains slide away to reveal a strange object; a bronze metal archway with coloured lights and a hanging device that looked like a pendulum.
“Wait a minute where are Thrazzi and Ossl?” Pierre asks looking around. To his surprise, one of the curtains starts stirring, before it is thrown off to reveal Ossl on his back.
“Getoffame!” a muffled voice cries from underneath Ossl, who scrambles to his feet. A crumpled looking Thrazzi lies where Ossl had once been.
“Thrazzi stop playing about on the floor and come and look at this!” Jacobi calls to the gargoyle, who grumbles and ruffles his wings straight.
Pierre was sitting on Jacobi's head, examining the top of the archway. He starts taping one of the lights which flickers dully.
“I hope you know what your doing.” Jacobi mutters worriedly.
“This thing hasn't been used in years, I just hope the circuits haven't burnt out.” says Pierre
He gives the archway a thump with his fist, and it begins humming. Everyone takes a step back from it, looking scared. From the machine comes a distorted electronic voice.
“Welcome to the Gateway of the Greatest Realms, the doorway to your greatest adventures. For the slow people in the audience; THIS IS WHERE YOU GET ON. And for the smarter people, please take the token from the slot.”
There's a rattling sound and from a slot at the base of the arch a tiny gold iridescent metal token. Ossl scoops it up and holds it between his finger and thumb.
“Ooh, pretty.” he says happily
“Place the token into one of the lights on the archway and you'll be on your way!”
“Ok then!” Ossl grins and shoves the token into a nearby red light.
“Hang on!”Thrazzi cries, but too late. The machine starts humming and the pendulum starts spinning slowly at first and the faster and faster. Green sparks flash from the archway and a shimmering light grows from the centre of the archway; a window beyond which they could see trees and tall buildings. Pierre jumps through the portal and waves to the others.
“Next time think before you jump in like that!” Thrazzi scolds Ossl, who mumbles an apology.
“Where are we?” Jacobi asks?
The group find themselves in a hedge row next to a deserted plaza outside of a large circular building, like a stadium. Behind them is a vast expanse of shining skyscrapers and other modern looking buildings.
“I don't know,” says Pierre thoughtfully “It looks familiar. I wonder where everyone is though.”
They make their way across the plaza. As they approach the building they hear roars and applauses.
“Sounds like a real party!” Thrazzi says looking excited.
“Maybe its a music hall, there's a few where I come from.” says Pierre, reaching a door and pushing it open.
Inside is a huge arena surrounded by rings of seats, almost like a sports stadium. Instead of a grassy pitch or a flat court, there are raised platforms, two large ones at opposite sides on top of which two people were standing and three smaller pairs between them. Behind each of the big platforms are two large boards with the number 10 on each of them. The audience cheer and scream.
“Lets find some seats.” Pierre says pointing to some nearby empty ones.
Ossl and Jacobi squeeze uncomfortably into two seats each, while Thrazzi and Pierre find it much easier.
The crowd gives another roar as the game begins. The two players hold up what looks like-
“Are they playing with cards?” Pierre asks to the others.
“What are cards?” Ossl replies, scratching his head.
“Bits of paper with things drawn on them,” Pierre explains, sounding rather unimpressed “There are all sorts of cards. But they're very small games and not very exciting.”
One of the players holds up a card and shouts something. Immediately on one of platforms a huge four legged dragon covered in armour appears, causing Pierre and the three reptiles to gasp in surprise. The other player also holds up a card and another beast, what looked like a huge tiger with a sword and shield. Jacobi peers more closely at the beasts. They had a pinched, tired look to them and they appeared rather sad.
“They don't look happy.” he says.
“And I don't blame them,” Pierre replies looking horrified, “Oh no they're going to fight!”
The tiger had jumped to the dragon's platform. Strangely the dragon didn't look alarmed at all and the tiger gave it a halfhardy pat on the head. The dragons says something inaudible over the din of the crowd and then slinks off to the side of the arena.
“Well that was underwhelming,” Thrazzi sights, resting his chin on his hands “Not even a punch or scratch.”
An hour later and the match came to an end, but neither the reptiles nor Pierre were paying much attention. Jacobi had taken out a large newspaper entitled “The Daily Mythical” with a logo of a griffin with a winged helmet and bearing the headline:
“Hoarding crisis, Treasure and maiden prices sky rocket”
Pierre and Thrazzi were both asleep in their chairs and Ossl was staring glassy eyed at the ceiling.
“I think its over.” Jacobi says, looking up and tucking away his paper.
Pierre and Thrazzi jerk awake and mumble.
“About time too.” Thrazzi sighs, flexing his wings and legs.
“OH WOW LIKE TOTALLY WOW, LOOK AT YOUR MONSTERS!”
“WAGH!” Pierre cries out in surprise. A girl with strange bright purple hair that was so long it reached her waist and with two hairs sticking up, huge eyes behind a pair of glasses, a small nose and mouth. She was gazing in awe at Pierre and the reptiles.
“Those are your monsters aren't they?” she asks, pointing at Jacobi.
“They're not monsters!” Pierre replies riling up at once “They're my friends.”
The girl looks intently at Pierre.
“Friends? That's weird.”
“Not as weird as that thing on your head.” Thrazzi grunts, nodding at her strange hair.
The girl ignores the gargoyle and keeps talking to Pierre. Thrazzi huffs and folds his arms.
“Whats up with your skin? Its all dark!” she says
“What do you mean?” Pierre replies, looking down at his arm “Its just my skin colour.”
“Everyone else is pale.” Jacobi mummers, looking around the arena
“Then you should go out into the sun!” Pierre says severely to the girl, who seems to ignore him.
“You should totally enter the battle,” she says pointing to the arena. “Anyone can go in if they have monsters.”
“Oh no thank you, I don't like fighting,” Pierre replies. “I only raise my fists when really angry-”
“HEY YOU!”
A newcomer pushes his way up to Pierre, a boy with very spiky hair in three layers of colours; black, white and blonde. He had a fierce face with a slightly insane grin.
“I TAKUTO CHALLENGE YOU TO A DUEL!” he screams, so loudly his voice reverberating around the arena, causing Ossl to flinch and shudder. “Don't like loud noises." he mumbles.
“Wait you want me to fight you?” Pierre asks the boy “But I don't like fighting-”
“We must fight and this game is FUN!” Takuto shouts looking quite mad. “So get your cards ready and down onto the arena!”
“I don't have any cards though.” replies Pierre sounding frightened. As if in answer, a pack of cards flies over and smacks Thrazzi on the head.
“Ow!” the gargoyle cries “Who threw that?!”
“Its a beginner's deck,” the girl says, pushing up her glasses “Its full of all sorts of monsters and abilities, including a fearsome giant red-”
“Ok I didn't ask for your lifestory!” Thrazzi grumbles.
“You got your cards now come on!” Takuto says.
Soon Pierre and the reptiles find themselves facing Takuto and the girl on the platforms.
“You feeling ok?” Ossl asks Pierre, nuzzling the human with his nose.
“I don't know how to play this thing!” Pierre says “I don't think I'll win.”
Takuto gives a cruel laugh.
“Of course you won't win! I am a champion at this! Now lets get playing! We start by getting five cards from our decks. DO IT NOW!”
“All right all right,” Pierre mumbles picking out five cards “Now what genius?”
“Now is my turn and I SUMMON SUPER DUPER MUSKETEER DRAGON TO THE CENTRE!” Takuto bellows holding up a card. In the central platform a weary green dragon wearing musketeer uniform and sword appears to the cheers of the crowd.
“Why do I have to be called super duper?” he mutters to himself, flinching at the loud noises.
“And that is how you summon fighters. Our goal is to destroy the ten life points. And remember to take a card each time your turn begins. That's my go over, now its your turn” Takuto addresses Pierre “AND HURRY UP! I WANT TO WIN!”
“What a loon,” Jacobi growls softly, then looks down at Pierre's cards. “Oh pick that guy he looks strong!” he adds pointing to one.
“Ok then, I summon this fellow to the centre because why not?” says Pierre.
In the centre platform a big red and orange dragon appears armed with a sword.
“Ugh,” the dragon mumbles. “I hope this is over quickly.”
“Greetings,” Pierre says to the dragon “Are you feeling ok?”
“Wuh? Oh, erm I'm ok...thanks for asking.” the dragon replies, looking confused at the human.
“Hey don't talk to it!” Takuto shouts, his eyes popping with anger. “Have you ended your turn or not?!”
“Okay okay!” Thrazzi calls over “Calm down cow hair!”
“HOW DARE YOU INSULT MY HAIR!” Takuto yells, louder than ever “I summon Ultra Nasty Super Scary werewolf!”
A huge dark brown creature appears on another platform, like a wolf but with large forelimbs, big hand paws with long claws. The face was like a wolf's but with something human like in its eyes. Like the dragons, he looks weary.
“I was having such a good rest!” he moans.
“Now you Musketeer dragon attack his dragon!”
The Musketeer dragon flies in front of Pierre's red and orange dragon.
“Sorry about this.” the green dragon mutters to the red one, who merely shrugs and walks off to the side of the arena and sits down.
Takuto was beside himself with glee.
“Hee! One step closer to victory! You stand no chance you idiot! Don't they have this awesome game where you come from?”
Pierre raises and eyebrow.
“Ooookay, I'm just going to ignore that and erm...Ossl do you think you could go onto the right platform?”
Ossl jumps over and lands onto the centre platform with a crash.
“I'll also summon, hmm...oh! I'll let Thrazzi take the right centre and Jacobi in the centre. And, now, Ossl can you take out that musketeer dragon over there?”
After several failed attempts, Ossl clambers up onto the musketeer dragon's platform.
“Hello!” he says cheerfully to the dragon.
“Hey.” the dragon replies.
“Um...sorry, but I have to take you out of the game.”
“Eh, no hard feelings, just tap me on the head and that's me out,” the dragon says shrugging. “Oh and don't forget to go back to your platform, otherwise old cow hair will have a hissy fit.”
So Ossl taps him gentle on the head and the dragon flies off to join the orange dragon. Takuto was still gloating.
“Not long now weirdo before I defeat you! Want to know how I got into this game?”
“Not particularly.” Pierre replies.
“When I was young,” Takuto began (and Pierre rolls his eyes) “I loved looking at cards and the monsters in them, hoping one day I could boss them around, but I never thought it could ever come true.”
“Oh dear, how very sad.” Thrazzi says in a deadpan voice.
“Then one day my parents died tragically. They had both slipped on a banana skin, fell into a porcupine nest and then a piano fell on top of them.”
“Aw, that is sad.” Jacobi says in a soothing, sympathetic voice; while throwing Pierre and Thrazzi, who were both snorting and giggling, witheringly looks.
“And now I know my true purpose in life is to win and always win, to climb to the top and win again and again. This card game is not just a game, it is a way of life! It is war and strategy and more people should buy it, even though its expensive! There's secrets in these cards to find and unleash on idiots like you to make you see the truth in life!”
“And we're back to this again.” Jacobi sighs, his wings drooping.
“You will see the Liver of the Cards you and will tremble before me! The great world conqueror!”
Takuto stops talking, breathing heavily; a crazy smile across his face.
“Oh for the love of-” Pierre mutters “Lets just get this over with!”
“Make your final moves oddball!” Takuto taunts.
Raising an eyebrow Pierre takes another card from his deck and readies himself.
“Right then, I shall have Ossl take your werewolf to leave and Thrazzi and Jacobi attack you!”
“Oh yes!” Thrazzi cries out in joy, cracking his knuckles.
As soon as Ossl calmly takes out the werewolf with a pat on the head (the werewolf eagerly slinks away to have a nap at the side of the arena), Thrazzi launches himself at Takuto and starts punching him!
“This is for screaming all the time!” the gargoyle snarls “This is for dragging us into this stupid game! And this, oh oh, this is for having the dumbest hair I have ever seen!” he finishes, with a swipe of his tail before flying back to his platform, leaving Takuto bruised, missing a few teeth and looking very weak. The large board behind him now showed the number 7.
“Thazzi how could you?” Jacobi scolds.
“What? He's annoying!”
“That's no reason to act this way,” Jacobi says flying over to Takuto and patting him on the head “How you hanging?” he asks not unkindly.
“I can see flying pink ponies!” Takuto mumbles weakly before falling over; his board now reading 5.
Takuto then picks himself up and glares daggers at Pierre.
“Oooh you're going to pay for this!” he yells, “I summon a dragon assassin with the assassin ability it can attack your life points!”
The dragon assassin flies over and lands in front of Pierre. He is tall and slim with blue scaly skin. Most of his body is hidden by shrouds.
“Hi there, look I got to take your life points, so here.”
And he pats Pierre on the shoulder and the board behind his platform now reads 8.
“Don't worry you're still doing well and its great you beat him up,” the dragon says with a wink “He's been so rude to us for along time.”
A nerve was twitching in Takuto's forehead as he ended his turn.
“I will destroy you somehow...” he yells “I cannot loose! Loosing is for loosers! Your attacks will do nothing against me!”
Pierre picks a card and examines it looking confused.
“Super Ultra Mega Giant Destructor blade? Seems a bit redundant doesn't it?”
“WHAAAAAAAAAT?!” Takuto screams, looking horrified “How did you get that?!”
“I just found it in this deck of cards.”
“B-b-but...NO!” Takuto shrieked like an injured animal, falling to his knees “With that you take all my life points! Why? WHY?! You cheated you stupid little outsider!”
“Its no good asking why,” Jacobi says irritated “Its your fault for making his play this wretched game, you should have know there was a chance this would happen; we won fair and square.”
And with that he and his friends climb down from the platforms and meet with the creatures sitting at the side of the arena.
“I can't believe I have lost. I am worthless, I have brought no glory, only shame and misery to my name! I am less than dirt less than nothing.” Takuto says, eyes glistening with tears as he stares down at his own hands.
“Its just a card game,” says the purple haired girl beside him, shrugging “I mean who gives a fu-”
"Well that was pointless." Thrazzi says, flinching as a renewed stream of cries and screams comes from Takuto “Can we got now?"
“Can we come with you?” asks the orange dragon nervously, “We don't want to go back into the cards, its dank and dreary in there.”
“Of course you can!” Jacobi says warmly, patting the dragon on the shoulder. “We never say no to a friendly face.”
They reach the main doors.
“It'll be good to get some fresh air!” the werewolf says stretching his long paws “I'm so tired of musty old arenas and- oh.”
Oh was the right response! The doors swing open revealing a huge crowd of people; more strange hair, crazed smiles and determined faces all holding more cards.
“I think they want to play against us...” says Ossl.
“Not again!” Pierre groans.
