How to draw Cartoony Lemurs + Zahzu
I can't believe I haven't uploaded this to FA. o.o
Umm. Yeah. This is my fairly old guide to drawing Ring-Tailed Lemurs. It's reallllly crappy, fairly simple, and it's pretty stylized... Whenever I work on the darn thing I end up being pressed for time so I have to throw together the pics really quick.
It doubles as a basic reference for Zahzu, since I didn't want to make her a separate one with all the same info.
This is v2 of the guide, and I plan to keep updating it. Future updates will have photos of each body part (for a realistic reference), a guide to the actual body anatomy of a natural Ring-Tailed Lemur, more detailed guides to the markings, and hopefully a lot more information and improved artwork. Oh, and I'll also add some examples of how to stylize the features in different ways, and ultimately I'll start making guides for other species of lemurs.
All this information was obtained by my own close study. I've been working at zoos with lemurs for 3 years, and for 2 of those years my job was to hold the lemurs on my shoulder or a table. During that time I would study all their features, take photos, etc. when I wasn't teaching the kids. I've also watched during medical procedures with anesthetized lemurs, which gave me time to study the dental structure.
Long story short, this guide has some info that's pretty hard to come by! It's something that's almost impossible to learn from photos alone- Trust me, I have well over 1,000 photos of Ring-Tailed Lemurs alone that I've collected around the internet, and none of them serve as a very good reference for half this stuff. x)
Anyhow, I'm talking too much. This always happens when I get started with lemurs!
I'll probably re-upload it whenever I update. :)

Thanks! :D Indeed I do. I study a lot of the animals I work with pretty closely. I'm just fascinated by all their features- each animal is so specialized for what they do, it's amazing! And then a lot of the time when said animals are drawn, people generalize their features to those of animals they're familiar with (giving lemurs paws, for example). I love how unique the animals are, so when I get the chance to work with one first-hand then I try to learn all those features so that whenever I draw them I'll be able to do it right!
Then again, I'm a nerd and I just love to learn things. xD

Yay, glad it helped! :D I knew the tooth thing would be useful. But apparently the thing about the feet isn't...? XD I thought more people would be interested in the weird shape of the foot and the fact that they only have 1 'claw'. I think the feet are awesome and weird! But, maybe it's just me. I still have a hard time finding photos of the feet, though. :I
Rambling! You're welcome, though!
And aww, thank you!

Hey, I volunteer at the St. Louis Zoo and they have a lot of lemurs. Next time I'm at the zoo I can get some shots for you if you'd like. The teeth may be really tough, but I doubt the feet would be any bit of a real problem; I have a pretty bitching camera and I'll take some requests if you are willing. Just tell me what angles and such you'd want to see and I'll see what I can do. :>
Ohhh, yes! The St. Louis Zoo, that's fantastic! :D So you've worked with the Sifakas, then? Nice! I'm mostly jealous of their Black Lemurs, though. My local zoo has (or USED to have.) Black Lemurs, but I can never see them! They're on an island that you can't see unless you pay $3 per person for a boat ticket. Too much money to pay for all the kids in my family. :/ They're one of my absolute favorite species, though! If you ever get to work with them, I'd love to see any and all photos you're willing to share! I love them so much- Any picture will make me happy! <3
Anyhow, as far as angles and such go, it'd be great if I could get some views of the underside and topside of the feet (hind feet, not the hands). If you can get them in a flattened position, such as on the ground, that'd be great. Along with a relaxed position when they're resting or something. I used to have no problem getting such photos, unfortunately I didn't have my nice camera when I was at that job so I never got any decent photos. They all turned out blurry. :/

See, I don't work with the animals really, so I can only really just stand back and hope I get a good angle. They are pretty darn strict about that stuff at the St. Louis Zoo, and since it's such an established and renowned zoo, they have a zoo keeper for most everything. Hopefully, I'll get tour guide some day, but for now I work at the insectariums, which wasn't a bad gig. It's the closest I can get to the animals (butterflies are flying around everywhere haha)... and I hear eventually, if I get enough street cred, I can actually go in the back and help out in there.
Honestly, I'm not a total bug nut, but I think many of them are pretty jawesome, and as odd as this sounds, for all the things I could volunteer for (aside from tour guide) it was easily the best spot for my interests, plus I get like... mega awesome benefits while I'm simply at the zoo... Like, some of the Lemurs are only in the children’s section ($2 per person), but since I'm a volunteer I get in free!
I'll see what I can do though... and it's always nice going to the zoo with a goal in mind! If ever you want to see a buncha animal photos from me... you can go to my http://photolupinator.deviantart.com/ photography account, or see some of my selects on my "scraps" here on FA.

Ahhhh, I see. That's the problem with working in big zoos, I suppose. All the places where I've worked have been smaller- In most cases I'll be cleaning a lemur cage alongside the owner of the facility. x) I think that's the best way to go, though. Big zoos are great, but you don't get the same experience. It's still a great opportunity! Just not as interesting, or even as educational, as working somewhere smaller where you get to learn first-hand about the animals rather than just having to clean up after them.
I'm not an insect fanatic either, but I do think they're amazing creatures! I was on a big moth kick for a while- I remember spending a whole day looking up moth photos online. There are a lot of really cool bugs out there that make for interesting characters! :P
Ohh, nice! I guess that's one great part about volunteering- the benefits! Although at the same time, the place where I volunteer (the bigger facility) has more of the unappealing parts of zoo volunteering, but I don't know if they'd even let me in the park for free. Then again, I've never asked! I'll have to see about that the next time I go out- If they did let me in for free, then as long as they have their gift shop stocked with lemur stuff then I'll pretty much pay for my entry by buying everything they have! xD Gah, getting off topic again!
Alright, thank you! I watched the DA account, so I'll keep an eye out for any more lemur photos. (:

I know it. It's supply and demand. At the bigger zoos... they honestly need you less. It's hard to feel like you are really contributing. When I was in africa... they were incredibly volunteer dependant... and I did virtually every single thing the rest of the full time staff did. I even headed projects of my own. I'm glad you get to be so involved and love animals as much as you do though, that's pretty awesome to me.
I knoooow... some moths are friggen huuuge too... bigger than some of the bats around here. It astounds me.
Good luck with the free admittance and hurr durr. :>
Yeaaah... I'll post more... but make sure to watch my scraps... that's where more of my "stock" photos go as opposed to my main page which is more of the "pick of the litter" type area.

Very true! My local zoo hires keepers... But they've got crazy requirements. You have to have been to college for this thing and that thing- Just to clean elephant poop and whatever. Not even vet stuff- Just basic care stuff! I'm not old enough to go to college, but I wouldn't be surprised if I could teach every keeper at the zoo a LOT about proper lemur care.
I doubt they care a whole lot about the lemur care, though. Lemurs aren't one of their more popular animals, even though they have 4 species- including Black Lemurs. Then again, the lemurs are only exhibit for like 2 months out of the year, and they're out on these islands 50 feet away from where guests walk. You have to go on the $3 boat ride to see them. -.-
But, I digress! Bigger zoos are just annoying. It's so cool that they let you do all that stuff in Africa! I can see why it'd be mostly volunteers, since they're not a very rich place, so I'm sure they really appreciate all that help. Places that really appreciate your help are usually the ones that let you do the most, and are the most rewarding places to work at. Doing something like that in a natural environment must be even more amazing!
Yeah! I can't even imagine how big the Atlas Moths and Birdwing Moths must be- The biggest moth or butterfly I've seen is a Swallowtail butterfly.
Thanks. xD I'll need the luck!
How do you watch people's scraps on FA..? :I

I know... OH God do I know... it's pretty BS... But yanno... people want to think they went to school that long for a purpose right? I guess they deserve a job after wasting that much money... But damn, schools can really erk me.
Yeah, during my interview at the St. Louis Zoo, the person giving me the interview pretty much told me that I'd be bored there after I told her my experiences in Africa. But, yanno... I just want to help is all. It doesn't have to be glamorious.
You don't watch people's scraps on FA... they go to your inbox regardless... I was talking about on DA.

AGH, YES. To be honest, I think it'd be more beneficial NOT to go to school, in a lot of cases. If you don't spend 2 or 4 years or whatever going to school for stupid things like animal behavior, you could instead spend those years working every day at a zoo and learning their behavior first-hand. You get so much more experience and learn a lot more. BUT THEREIN LIES THE PROBLEM. People don't care how much you REALLY KNOW. All they care about are what papers you have! You could be the next Albert Einstein, but if you don't have papers then nobody will give you a chance.
I'll be surprised if I ever get to go to college- I come from a poor family who could never afford to put me in school. And if I ever made the thousands of dollars needed to go, I wouldn't spend it on stupid classes. I'd use it to buy my own animals and start my research! Problem is, my research won't have much credit unless I have PAPERS. So I'll have to hope I can get a scholarship or something, haha. x)
Darn it, rambling again!
Really? Hah, funny! At least she told you straight that it wouldn't be as fun, though. With me, I'm not afraid to do all the boring dirty work. I'm happy to help. But if I'm volunteering, I think it's fair that I get to have at least a little fun. Once I get my place set up and take a few volunteers, I'd make sure it was a fun experience, even with the hard work. Someone putting in their time for free- What does it hurt to let them spend a few minutes with an animal or something? Which is the problem with big zoos- A lot of the time, the zookeepers can't let volunteers do that. It's just not up to them, they don't have the place. So the volunteers might do it because they want to help and they won't expect any treats, but personally if I was a keeper helping with the volunteers... I'd feel bad for it.
Ohright. DA. Ahaaaa... xD

That's me in a nut shell. Learn through experience... you can study up and down, but you'll never know until you've gone and done it. And, I'd hate to spend all this time in school just to find out I don't like it in practice. It's pretty BS... I'm an extremely experienced guy, and I've done more with my life than most 21 year olds... but no one would care unless I went to college to be vaguely qualified for something that is basically unrelated to what I may be doing.
Well, I was poor too. I joined the military... but that's another story... Point is, if there is a will there is a way, I kinda believe that... and as long as people are willing to talk with you, and you can let your actions speak for you... then you'll find someone that can take you seriously. And, it also means you worked harder, and earned what you have. Honestly, you seem like a very passionate young lady with a drive in you to so some great things, if you are willing to be patient, work hard, and stay positive, you're dreams may just come true for you.
I know how you feel though, truly. And, if you ever do get that place set up, let me know about it haaa... I'll drop by and teach your lemur how to be ferocious cheetahs.

Exactly! :) I don't even have a word to add to that- You summed up my thoughts perfectly!
I don't consider myself an expert. I don't have 20 years of experience, and I'm sure I'd do a lot of things wrong. But I have been working around these animals a lot longer than most people my age, I'm not afraid to get bitten and I know what it takes to avoid such things.
In the case of Ring-Tailed Lemurs, there simply is no avoiding it. Temperamental demons.
I think that my passion and all that good stuff would work when it comes to finding job and volunteer positions at zoos and whatnot, but I'm not sure if it would get me into college. x) I'm sure I can make the money I need to get my animal place started, though. I've managed to make quite a few connections with some incredible people who have already agreed to help me with my goal of getting these animals. All I need to work on now is getting some paper credentials that can get a job to save money to get my first animals.
I'll keep thinking positive, though. I know there's some way it can happen! I've just got to look around until I can find it. I'll just keep working for it, try to get in contact with some people- Do my best to reach this dream. I know I'll never give up- I'm not that kind of person. I persevere and have hope even when there's not much hope to be had for it.
I'll definitely let you know! And HA, you can try it with some of the others, but if you try it on the Ring-Taileds... You'll have to go back to Africa and teach the cheetahs how to be ferocious lemurs.

I know... I actually kinda thought the military was better than school... dropped out when I was 17, got my GED in a couple days, joined, and jeeze. But, I finally think I found something I want to go to school for though. Teaching... and... we'll see how that works out. Hopefully I can be an art teacher... but man... I'm still heavily debating the idea of being a conservationist... The thing about that though is, I'm actually at the point in my young life where I've experienced so many things and still haven't found the fulfillment I was looking for... I dunno... uuuuhg. We'll see what happens. I'll go to college, get my generals... and see what happens. It's just that, I'm as passionate about people as I am about animals… AND ART! I can't have it all... and I think if I ever want to have a family and settle down... conservation might not be the best. :C
Passion is very very powerful... It's what will define you from having an ordinary life or an extraordinary life. It'll come with more ups and downs sure, a hell of a lot less security, but the rewards will be something irreplaceable and well earned. Know what you want, and don't loose sight of it. Most people wouldn't have gotten as far as I did as quickly without the dedication and passion that I try to have in the things I do. They wouldn't make the sacrifices I did either... and maybe that's something you need to think about too. Nothing worth having was easy to obtain. I know your young still, but you need to think about what you want and then throw yourself into it. And getting yourself into college... isn't as hard as you'd think either... but yanno... don't puts around in there either. Know why you are going to school or wait until you do know.
HAHAHA GOOD! I'm supremely happy to hear you'll stay positive, and you'd better not get all emo, and give up on yourself and your dreams and shitshit on me either! Or, I'll come over there and falcon puanch you in the cooter! :3
Ring-tailed are awesome because of that though! :> And I've never been afraid to be injured... and I laugh it off and play it cool when an animal suddenly gets pissy for no reason, but I don't get hurt by animals too often, because I know how to read them... haha... It only happens when you force them to do something they don't want... but haha cats can be weird sometimes though... The best thing is to just be calm and the animal will usually mellow out and not view you as something to freakout about.

Whoop, forgot to reply to this. I guess because I didn't know what to say. And I still kinda don't, so I'll just respond to the things I actually have a response to. x)
I think if I made it into college, I should probably learn some vet stuff... I've been thinking about all that the last few days, and I almost think that what I'd really like to do is learn about animal DNA stuff. See, I don't even know an actual term for it- Shows how far I'll get in the field, haha. I was thinking about some of the lemurs I already know (as in, individual animals at small private-owned wildlife parks and stuff- Places I've volunteered at) and how I'd like to buy them in the future. Get them into a home that 1: has time for the animal and would specialize with them, and 2: actually KNOWS about how to properly take care of a lemur. Give them a better life and all that. Anyhow, I always have major concerns about their exact species/subspecies and about their family, making sure they aren't hybrids and that I don't interbreed or inbreed my lemurs. It's a big issue to me, and really it's something I'm very interested in. I don't know what kind of schooling and stuff it'll take for it, though. I might not like DNA analyzing once I get into it, I really don't know. Just a thought, haha.
But I think if it's something that you aren't completely enjoying and feel fulfilled doing, then you really shouldn't do it- At least not as a career.
This was the part where I didn't know what to say! It was kind of deep- I don't know how to reply to deep. But thanks for all that! It really got me thinking. :)
Yes, they are! They're really interesting to study because their troop system is kind of neat- Always changing, too. As far as handling them, though, I'm not sure- To be honest, the lemurs I've worked with so far were all improperly raised and cared for, so their behavior was really unusual. From my experiences, they seem like they're not any fun to work with, but I've seen them at more professional facilities and they were a lot more friendly. Regardless, they're one of the most aggressive and confrontational lemurs.
I've only been bitten 4 or 5 times after working with the lemurs for 2 years. (I'd been handling them in a way for 3 years before that, but not as an actual keeper/volunteer or anything. I just frequently visited a backyard-breeder who had lemurs I got to hold and play with). Twice from a Red Ruffed Lemur at said backyard breeder's place- He was neutered (which is ridiculous, Especially with a Ruffed Lemur, since it has NO positive effect on the behavior and it removes a perfectly good animal from the breeding pool) and had really erratic behavior. Both times I was bitten by him it was because of this other volunteer who was an idiot and did things she was specifically told not to. I got 1 or 2 bites from a neutered male Ring-Tailed Lemur who had been improperly raised. Too much play fighting with people, not enough positive play, and he got reeeeeally spoiled- treated like a pampered pet. Then my only 'major' bite (none of the others had even drawn blood. They were just nips) was from the troop of Ring-Tailed Lemurs at the place with the improperly-raised Ring-Tail. Their troop was in a fairly small cage, they had an unbalanced amount of males and females (ONE male to 6 or 7 females), and their females had- GASP- been raised improperly. REALLY aggressive- ANY person who walked into the cage instantly got attacked. The time I was bitten, I was in the cage with their summer camp group. Out of the 5 or 6 kids who went in there, 3 of them came out with bites. The other kids just happened to be feeding the nicer lemurs.
Since a lot of the Ring-Taileds I've handled weren't cared for right, I guess I can't say much about their normal behavior. xD But I never liked working with those guys. Maybe I'll have better luck with lemurs that are properly cared for.
Oh, yay! XD Well then, glad you liked that too, haha.
I think a lot of people figure they're like hands, because that's what monkey feet are kinda like. Monkeys are dumb, though. And their hands+feet actually look really different than lemurs'.
I love the feet, though. The thumb toe is just so huge! And the squished round tip is funky. XD
I agree that the teeth are more impressive. :B

You're very welcome! :D I need to update it sometime with some redraws (some of the art is reeeeally old and outdated, haha) and some more info. The exact markings along the body, anatomy of a regular Ring-Tailed Lemur, etc. I also want to add photo pages for each section, because I've FINALLY found photos of the toothcomb, the feet (+ their 1 little grooming claw on each foot!), etc.
Anyhow, I'm glad this could help you out! Whenever I give this an update I'll probably re-upload it or something so you'll see it in your inbox! (:

N'AWWW THANK YOUUUUU
I seriously need to update this ref, aaaAAAAH. I keep saying I'm going to, yet I never do. xD I've always got a million projects going on! Narrrgh!
Flash refs are the best, man. I can never keep all my thoughts and details organized on a single-page ref! For me, this is the way to goooo! <3

Ahahaha!
Aw man, it's weird, my characters actually... hardly EEEEEVER change, much! Zah pretty much hasn't changed at all since I made this, she just... got more realistic. xD Then again, I also have a ton of characters, so I can't spend a ton of time and ideas redesigning one!
I NEVER KNEW HOW TO WORK FLASH, BUT I TRY ANYWAY! 8'D

AAAHHHH WOWWWW THANK YOU!
I'm actually in the process of making a new version of this, which'll be a lot... better. In every way. 8V
But yeah, haha! I really like the idea of teaching people in a kind of interactive way, so I try to incorporate that into my art, as well. Hopefully, once I have a more sleek and informative ref (rather than this really shoddy one!) it'll be a lot more helpful!

Haha! Glad I could help!!
I'm in the process of making a FAR more useful (and more accurate... and more detailed... and better-drawn... AND GENERALLY JUST BETTER) version of this! It's pretty close to being done, so WHOOP.
And yeah, I love using Flash for ref sheets! I don't like over-crowding single image refs, y'know?
The only downside to flash refs is that people on iPhones, etc. can't view them... 8'v
