The character design itself is obviously excellent, but the background detracts. Mixing rendered graphics with drawn art doesn't often work well; the background steals the focus and winds up dominating the picture. It would be like painting an impressionist portrait of someone with a realistic background.

I still believe that, even if Kaienne is right about the background appearing more than the character, the picture as a whole looks simply great :) I love it. Absolutely my favourite coloring scheme all over

I think the problem is the halo around the char, separating it from the background way too hard because it makes the char too bright. You get destracted because you now have two pics in one, as the char fails to integrate into the background's dark topic.
Furthermore the color schemes of both elements are different: red/blue/grey vs. green/turquoise. That's a pretty hard contrast, even after you added some green to the char's shading.
It still looks good, but it's not your best pic.

Yes but in this case it somehow backfired. Even without the halo the char wouldn't fit into the background (cannot determine why, I guess I need some rest before finding out what exactly looks odd to me :-P).

This is really beautiful! I can't think of much of intelligence to say beyond that. The background is gorgeous, and the character is very handsome.
