Chapter 13
“Here we are,” said David as he and Felix peaked out from behind the bush. “Let’s see how Fredric does solo.”
“Hmpth,” grumbled Flint with a scowl David chose to ignore.
“Now then,” said Fredric as he addressed the Squirtle before him. “We’ve found a Litleo. Before we can attack it to grow in battle, we need to consider the typing advantages of both ourselves and our opponent and consider which attack will be the best one to use. Most of the time we leave that up to David as our trainer. He’s young, but he’s learning just like we are.”
“Uh-huh,” grumbled the turtle in indifference. “Look, I know ‘bout typin’. Two Water Gun and that Litleo ain’t nothing more than a pile of embers!”
“You’re not going to be able to win a battle if you get cocky,” replied the Braixen. “If you’re not careful, you could end up dying. It’s a possible chance, and it’s an unnecessary risk we don’t need to take.”
“I’m not stupid,” retorted Spike. “I just don’ like bein’ told what to do.”
Fredric took a large breath and let it out slowly before opening his eyes and staring down at the defiant Squirtle. “Alright, then show me how you’ll battle with this opponent. You have the type advantage so I’ll let you do the attacking. If it looks like you need help, I will step in.”
David backed away from the bush and quietly walked away from the fox and the turtle. Felix remained at his ankles. The Fletchinder still perched on top of his head yawned loudly.
“Fredric is right about one thing,” said David once they were far enough away not to disturb the pair training. “Knowing your type advantage is important. So is knowing how your moves and your ability work in battle.”
The Froakie nodded slightly before looking down at the ground.
“Hey,” said the boy as he stopped and crouched beside the small frog. “What’s wrong?”
Felix sniffled slightly before muttering softly in tones so low that David almost missed it. “I know why I was given up.”
“Come here,” replied the boy as he picked up the frog. “Okay, now tell me why you think that.”
“Well,” murmured the Froakie in hesitation. “I’m useless. I was born knowing really advanced moves I inherited from my father, but I have a useless ability. I know Timmie has Protein. You’ll favour him over me. And you’ll give up on me.”
“Enough,” said David in a firm yet gentle tone. “How can you jump to that conclusion? You know Protect, Substitute, Hydro Pump and Bounce! You really are an amazing Pokémon. Who cares if you don’t have the hidden ability of your Pokémon species? I certainly don’t. You are just like every Pokémon on my team. Flint might be an annoying Sassy-mouth, but he’s still part of this team and I intend him to become a friend. I promise I will never give up on my friends. You are priceless to me. I won’t ever give up on you.”
The Froakie in his arms stared up at him with watering eyes. The bird on his head coughed lightly.
“I don’t care about why your original trainer gave you up,” continued David. “But I’m glad they did. I wouldn’t be your trainer now if they hadn’t and I wouldn’t have this chance to become friends with a special Pokémon like you.”
“Thanks,” muttered the tiny frog while avoiding eye contact out of appreciation.
“Alright,” replied David as he set Felix on the ground beside him. “Let’s find Casper and see what kind of advice he can give us. I’m sure -”
The boy was cut off as a blue and black Pokémon cut in front of their path. It snarled at them and refused to let them go around it.
“Looks like we have to battle it,” said David as he withdrew his Pokédex and aimed it at the new Pokémon.
“Riolu, the Emanation Pokémon,” stated the Pokédex. It didn’t elaborate any further.
“Okay,” muttered the boy. “But what type is it?”
“Fighting,” grumbled Flint in an almost whisper.
“In that case,” said David brightly. “Felix should be able to take it down! Bounce on this Riolu.”
The frog nodded and made a powerful leap into the air while narrowly avoiding an attack from the Riolu. Felix reached a point where he appeared very small from those on the ground before he began plummeting towards them.
“You never said the frog could fly too!” exclaimed Flint in interest.
“Bounce is a Flying-type move,” replied David. “At least according to my Pokédex it is.”
The Froakie zeroed in on the blue and black Fighting-type Pokémon and landed on it with all four feet. It was crumpled to the ground as the blue frog hopped off of it. Felix turned towards David with a wide grin.
Quick as a flash, the Riolu lashed out with a glowing paw. Felix was propelled through the air towards the boy with more force than should have been possible.
“No!” yelped Flint in shock. “Not Counter!”
David stood frozen as the Froakie landed in a crumpled heap on the ground. The Pokédex in his hand fell to the grass in a clatter. The fire bird screeched loudly and took off from his head to attack the Riolu. Flint leaving him spurred the boy into action and he found himself at the Froakie’s side.
“Felix!” yelled David as he gently picked up the Pokémon. “Felix! NO!”
The boy fished wildly through his bag for the Ultra Ball which had held the Pokémon. While he searched frantically, Flint slammed into the Riolu sending it flying back into the tall grass and out of sight. The frog’s breathing was harsh and shallow.
“Too late …” muttered Felix with a wheeze. He managed to smile weakly. “Thank … you …”
The frog’s eyes rolled back and he grew still in the boy’s arms. The smile was still in place as his face relaxed.
The boy located the Ultra Ball and held it above the Pokémon.
“Felix, return!” yelped David through tears beginning to well up in his eyes.
Nothing happened. The Froakie didn’t return to the ball.
“Felix, return!” repeated the boy while tapping the frog’s head with the ball. The tears were flowing freely now. “Come on. RETURN! Please return.”
“David,” said Fredric softly as the fire fox placed a paw on his trainer’s shoulder. “He can’t.”
“NO!” yelled David. “Please, Arceus, no! Return, Felix … please …”

This is a Fanfiction featuring the Wonderlocke mechanic under my own rules.
Talon's Rules
1. All Pokemon (with maybe the exception of your starter if you so wish) must have been obtained within a Wonder Trade upon starting the game.
2. You have six slots in your party. You must have three pokemon you can interchange per slot. Pokemon from the same group slot can never be in your party at the same time. Only one per group slot at a time. You will have a grand total of eighteen pokemon as part of your team.
3. If a Pokemon should faint, it is considered "DEAD" and must be either released or placed in the PC. Once all three pokemon from a group slot have fainted, you can only use five pokemon at a time.
4. No buying items (with the exception of the Poke Balls used to aid you in your Wonder Trade). All items are found in the region (or if you are super lucky, you may be able to rely on a pokemon whose ability is Pick Up as I have).
I do not own any characters that may coincide with characters from the games.
