Thankfully I don't have to worry about that - I just run the fans when I'm really busting out the heavy processing on the lappy - so not very often. The laptop itself runs quite happily on its own most of the time.

Sounds just like my old POS Dell laptop that's been giving me fits since I bought it in '01... It's barely functional now, and only used when I need certain specific tasks I can't do on my current computer (which is about once a month or two, or so)... Than God I'm on a Mac, now. :)
