As I occasionally do when I see a good chocobo post, I'll tell a little story.
The chocobos weren't originally called chocobos. They were called toriuma - horsebirds, or horseclaws. They had a very prominent role in Hayao Miyazaki's seminal manga, Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind. They filled exactly the same role - a world where horses had gone extinct, so they were bred to take their place.
Square's director of the time freely admits that he was inspired by the toriuma, and adopted them for the Final Fantasy series - but he rebadged them and called them chokobo. Thus were the chocobo that we know and love hatched!
The originals were, of course, far more cartoony then they very diatryma like toriuma, but over time they're grown more and more similar. In Final Fantasy XIV, other then the "dustmop" tail and somewhat smaller size, the chocobo and the horseclaws are pretty much identical.
The one sad thing is that there's never been a chocobo character quite like Kai and Kui, Nausicaa's mated horseclaws. They were Nausicaa's mount, destrier, and pack animals, but they played a very large role in the events of one chapter of the manga. Boko is the only example (AFAIK) within Final Fantasy.
(The Fat Chocobo, which is more or less a cross between a Buddha icon and a Shinto god, is the closest equivalent, and a whole separate story).
All that being said, great picture.
