Bleh! I hate the results for all of them. I guess I hate the upper left the least. It's funny, but I didn't realize why I was failing to badly at these the very end, when I decided to make this 4Square and changed the nails to white to make them more apparent. Yes, that's white. The colored lighting! I forgot about it.! No wonder I couldn't get anything to look the way I wanted it to. To give you an idea of how much colored lighting is being mixed in, the lower left corner image has a straight white-and-black Ambient Occlusion shader applied to it. All the other colors on the hands are due to my lighting setup.
I spent far too long on these, especially considering they are just temporary shading networks that are supposed to make it look better than flat shading without a lot of effort.
I'd like the forearm marking for Rederick to be back with gold highlights, it never looks as good as I'd like. Just those two colors is two flat and unappealing, I have to mix in others. Even with a little light blue on the reflection color and reflection falloff color (Upper right corner) the black was too black and obscuring the shape details of the palm. I tried dialing the black back with more blue, in the upper left. This is probably the best, but I didn't like how blue it looked. So, I tried to really hit on the black and gold (without being too blindingly saturated, which wouldn't fit in with the muted colors of the red body.) That disaster is in the lower right. The palm shape might be a bit more apparent, but the whole thing suffers instead and looks really bland. >:(
