After we had the gearheads meet at FC I was reminded of a past hobby when I lived closer to the bay. I used to head down to run with a group of other Mach 1 owners we called the Black Sheep Canyon Carvers (named by the leader's wife for saying we were like black sheep for some reason or another). I went poking around to see what was left of our exploits and pulled up this pic. It's not mine but I'm in it so that counts right? ;)
Anyway that day we had 8 Mach 1's tearing along the coastal hills. We arrived at one of our rallying points and lined up overlooking the Pacific for this shot. About 2 hours later after we had lunch, the white Mach toward the back of the line here was totaled in a ditch on the side of the road. That's the only time I ever saw someone stupid enough to wreck trying to do what we warned folks not to do (chasing the modified cars with experienced drivers in the harder part of the route).
Despite that there are times I definitely miss doing these runs. The twisties in the early morning, seeing the sun rise on the Pacific, banging along to some driving tunes and the roar of a 32V monster V8... yeah, good times. I miss being able to get away like that even for a day and just enjoy the cars and the drive.

Nah, we weren't drifters and racers in the Fast and the Furious sense. We did speed but most of us have repeated on track experience and fully modded suspension. The kid that wrecked was in a bone stock car on the factory 'Skaterbacks' (terrible tire). He was behind me on the slower portion of the route and I could see the car whipping around a lot right on the edge of control. I wanted to say something to him but didn't think it was my business to do so. Later I very much regretted not giving him and earful at lunch before the wreck.
What got him was a decreasing radius turn that we all knew about and he didn't. We hit it at full clip and he came in hard, punched the brake, snap oversteer and dropped into a ditch at around 60mph. The car behind him was filming so we had full view of what he did.

i didnt necessarily mean F&F sense, but there are some curvy roads here i get tempted every time to have some fun on. Problem is.. woods on both sides, one wrong move and my car could be done. Not worth the risk. Racing has been my dream since i was a little kid, but i want to do the right thing and go to school/get training for it. I have not been in any high powered cars yet.
Back when I was doing car work they wanted to use my GT for a drift racing exhibition. I shot them down when they said they weren't going to replace my brand new $1,200 set of Nittos after letting my car have the honor of being in a magazine. All the guys I learned from think drifting is a waste of tires and teaches bad racing lines, which in a practical racing sense it does. It looks really cool and is a great show of skill but it's not how you drive on track so we kept that sort out of our runs. Usually it made things safer for everyone because folks played within their limits. :)
True drifting is when you can do it with proper racing lines, and that is a BITCH to do even in games. I kinda wanna get a Genesis for my next car to have some fun with.. 350HP bone stock and its got a reasonable price tag. I sat in a Mustang and while i really like them, im a bit small for em.
