Heh, I remember the big hoo-ha when EA did it in Dead Space 3. Boy was that a laugh riot, and I mean at the players, not EA. Everyone complaining about it and I'm just sitting there going "okay, you can pay for new armors that are purely aesthetic, give your salvage bots sarcastic AI, have them find more salvage per run when you tend to get more than you need normally, buy "special weapons" whose components are so marginally better than the base you're unlikely to notice the difference, buy salvage straight which you shouldn't need to if you're playing the game right, and...yeah." There's a reason for the phrase "a sucker born every minute". If they can make all these superfluous extras and people will buy them, why not make money off of it?
As for mobile games, it at least makes sense for the free to download ones. They are otherwise not making any money off of them, so purchases are there for those "hardcore win regardless of cost" people. It's amazing how much they're likely milking these people who likely could have bought so many far more lasting things with all the money they dumped into buying special resources with real money to try and be at the top of the leader boards.
