I'm playing around with palette knife painting too. It's great fun and I love the texture and look of it. I'm not sure yet how to integrate it in my style, it requires a very different way of thinking about contours and detail... but for now it's great for studies and pictures which don't need tiny details.

Oh that is lovely! I've not seen palette knife painting for a long time and it's so nice to see that bold texture in application again! You've worked the pain very well in giving the fur texture and direction, the colours are accurate and very appealing. ^^ Such a lovely piece! I really want to have a go with palette knives... Any tips? c:
Very well done on this! :D

Thanks! I don't have much experience with it yet but the one thing I'd recommend as suggested to me by other painters is to use a lot of titanium white mixed with small quantities of the other colors. For example the background here is something like 90% white and 10% indigo blue (while the lion is painted with a regular brush using earth colors). Titanium white is very opaque so it will make a nice texture and allow you to fine tune the color mix by adding to it small quantities of other colors. This is especially important if you aim for somewhat realistic colors, but it's a good practice in general because earth colors are too transparent to be used alone with the palette knife and the more colorful paints can be overwhelming if you use them straight from the tube. Other than this, just experiment and have fun. :-D
