“Pass me the salt, please…”
Most of the Kahunas sat down to eat lunch and chat, hours before the game, in a windy Seattle afternoon. It was all seafood centric, the Pacific Northwest region being quite generous in that area.
“Dude, this place has like, the best fish…” spoke Teo Masalia.
“Teo, you can’t compete with Hawaii on this front. Trust me” added the heavily inked otter bigfur.
“It’s nice. For me, Hawaii is definitely up there, although Alaska is also good on that too...” Replied the Coat, Gerry Cross, all the chitchat friendly and lively enough, only a few guys being the reserved kind: Burgh, Alfie… and Julian. Weird that the canine was this silent, not even a peep. In fact, barely food on his plate
“Don’t want anything, Jules?”
He sighed. “Non… I’m alright”
“You not having anything?” asked Neil Warren.
“I’m not that much into fish…” Julian rubbed his eyes.
“Don’t want any rice or… I mean…” the locust insisted.
“I’m not THAT hungry, Tony…”
And, besides two more attempts to get words out of Julian, the lunch went as normal. But the monitor was skeptic at this change. Julian wasn’t normally the one to retreat.
“You think Julian’s ok?” Neil asked his former teammate, Teo.
“Parce, it’s just one lunch. He must’ve eaten heavy this morning…”
“Still. I don’t know what is going on with this guy…”

Another day of exhaustive training on the Hawaii facility flew by, everyone either on soft cardio activity to top it off or already heading to the locker rooms…. Everyone except Julian, still between weights and punching bags. The resilience and how he blocked the outside world both intriguing and quite concerning; he wasn’t like this. Come to think of it, he was acting up like that for quite some time now.
As the nile monitor walked into the locker room, with the intent of showering and changing, he did catch a glimpse at the seemingly steely saluki going at it again. As he took his jersey off, he spotted Alphose next to him; the monitor just had to get that off his mind.
“Yo Alfie…”
“Oi…” he was a bit weirded out. Neil wasn’t the one who tried to chat with the rat before.
“Don’t you think Julian’s acting… different?”
“’E what, now?”
Neil flickered his forked tongue; regretting it a bit afterwards. For the most part he learned to hold that sense in, especially in the locker room, but it was a tough reflex to master. “His workouts are… longer and not in the normal guard rhythm. I feel he’s overdoing it…”
The British rat snorted as he jammed his sweat soaked jersey in his locker. "Fook do I care if 'e been doin' extra pushups, eh? Long as 'e don't start takin' fuckin' naps on th' court, ain't me bizzy…."
The reptile sighed. As he got ready, the panther and the Friesian horse came by, catching that last part. “Who what now?” asked Teo.
“Hey T… Just talking about Julian…”
“Yeah. I noticed it too, amigo.”
“Now that you said it… his workout changed… drastically. Was that planned?” asked Chrstiaan.
“Not sure… But he’s been more shut in, Scoonie told me he just wants to improve and get wins.”
“But he’s on the wringer… I don’t think he realizes it.”
It was settled: some sort of intervention was needed. As they all got changed into their normal clothes, they sported Julian, resting between sets, laying down on the weight set. They walked up to the panting dog.
“Parce…”
He was a bit taken off guard by the feline and the reptile. “Quoi?”
“You think you might need a break?”
Julian’s eyes just narrowed in response.
Neil picked up the conversation. “Julian, we are worried that you are overexerting yourself. Like… these last days we never see you eat and we always see you doing these insane drills over and over.”
“Hey, I AM eating. I know my limits!” the French canine grew frustrated at this apparent vapid conversation.
“You’re working out a lot more than your plan recommends, and that’s not good, that’s not going to help the team in the long run”
Julian rubbed his temples. “It’s just a damn stress relief. We need it now…”
Neil became concerned. “It’s just that we noted you acting different from before. And we’re getting worried. Aurora’s noticing it, Tanya’s noticing it...”
The generuk passed by. “I know more fun ways of self-abuse…” she replied with her usual snark.
“Scoonie’s concerned… We’re just asking you to take it... slow.”
Julian didn’t have time for this. “Listen, you want to worry and be all gloomy, fine. But I want to win and I want to be on top. I’m just training and fulfilling what the trainers demand of me. If I have to do everything on this team, I’ll so do. Everything. All of it… Forget this; I’ll be in the showers…” Julian stormed away from a now dumbfounded confrontation group. This was potentially serious.

Everyone was up and hyped for the game, a home against the Whips. It was the chance to step it up. All reunited for the theoretic part of the game and get all the plans straight. Coach Berk stood opposite of all the players. His expression best described as serious, yet determined.
“Masalia, you have proven yourself to be a deadly combo-guard. But I’m sure hoping you get your magic back like that 3D day so you’d keep as PG for now on. Aurora, you’ve been solid, but you’re better off as perfecting your SG skills…” Berk kept briefing the status of the rest, from Burgh’s tendency to get injured, to Scoonie’s focus on either rebounds or points to keep him more concentrated and make his work as seamless as possible. He got to the saluki, who was a bit aloof at his teammates. “Julian, you’ve been putting solid numbers and slowly consolidating yourself as a combo. Head up pup, your effort is paying off!”
“I’m just trying to fulfill with what it’s demanded of me…” As Julian explained himself, both Teo and Neil shook heads and whispered their disagreements to each other. “..I know what I’m capable of and know this team demands more of me every d-”
“Masalia! Warren! What’s going on?”
They all turned at the two veterans, the panther breaking the silence. “I think that… as a group… we are just concerned about his health and change of attitude.”
“My HEALTH? Wait…” he scoffed.
“You… ok?”
“Yes, I’m perfectly fine!”
The Badger barely changed his expression. “I just want to listen to what they have to say for a sec…”
Neil Warren flickered his tongue reflexively before retaking the conversation “Julian claims he’s doing the workout programs and we see how he’s overexerting himself and fasting…” the French canine objecting to everything the reptile said, the rest witnessing the whole ordeal silently but knowingly. “We don’t want to send him out or I do want to get more time, but it’s just… signs we see…”
“I can’t do shit anymore without anyone complaining about it! Too this, too that and lots of BS. I’m here to play and get those points!”
“Stop!” the badger yelled, silencing the room. “First of all, your relations and friendships are secondary after your team dynamic. Love, hate… whatever, just keep your head in the game…” Julian replied with a strong yes, more aimed at Teo and Neil.“At the same time, if there’s stuff like this that can be threaten the well-being of my players, I want to know. It can be spot on, it can be exaggerated…”
“A lot of what you’re hearing right now IS subjective, for I am seeking improvement and wins - It’s true there has been a toll taken on all of us, but I’ve tried to keep myself on top-notch for every game there is. I’m not stupid to fast and I know my limits!”
“So it’s all up to you, Kiraly. I’ll be watching you. If you disregard food or overexert, there will be consequences, understood?” the coach said sternly as Julian nodded to his ultimatum. That out of the way, the team’s plans finally came to fruit; the theoretics set, and the times established. Berk’s decision of having Julian starting was met with skepticism and odd looks from the two vet guards, but the decision for tonight was final.
“Cross and Barrett, our starting big guys, with Masalia, Feckle and Kiraly as our guards to get the points; just enough strength from you for the bench to finish them off and we got this…” as the rest of the plans were discussed and eventually established, the meeting was dismissed, everyone returning to prepare for that night’s game.
“Kiraly...” the coach said when the dog was the only one in earshot. The canine turned to the badger.
“I expect what *everyone* has said in this room a while ago; including you. The trainers and I will still make sure everything’s ok…” Said the badger, as stern as ever.
Julian nodded, albeit stoically. “There’s no problem with me whatsoever. I don’t have any disorder or crap they’ve been saying. I just want to win and do my best.”
“Then go out there and make it happen, whelp. You’re starting, so bring it home…”

...soooo where's the problem in this story?
Really the only risk here is that he's reading up on Scoonie's training manual which... is sort of dumb... considering he has like, a coach, and this being one of the teams in the best league on earth, one expects this to be a very GOOD coach, whom he could just walk up to and ask for a customized and more intense routine that wont, ya know, end up making him foolishly injure himself and ultimately not playing at all. So much for all the effort.
Then again, even if he did ask for a customized intense routine (which, if he gets two brain cells working he will. Because what the hell are you doing copying a players unique routine who isn't even your same species or position ya dumb dog? what can possibly result from this but you getting yourself injured? even if it works, its not ideal training for you, utterly inefficient no matter how you cut it)
ok so i guess I found the problem in the story :P heh.
Oh and... yeah Alfie's got the right attitude here. (cant believe I just said that) This aint buddy buddy friend time at pre-school. This is the pro leagues. Let the man (dog) do his damn workouts. Oh so he's in a bad mood? boo hoo...seem to be quite sensitive to having a grumpy dog, despite dealing with Burgh and Alphonse. Only moment this would ever be a problem worth the coach's time is if teamwork is compromised or performance. And that hasn't happened...
yet.

Uh oh, I knew it. I KNEW something was wrong with Jules.
It appears that he's having an extreme case of tunnel-vision. When one gets like that, it takes some SERIOUS help to get back. Now I understand that things must be kept professional, but there's also a great deal of work that comes with keeping a team together. You work together yes, but if no one likes you, then you might as well not even be there, regardless of your playing ability. Now I'm not saying that they need to be buddy-buddy with you, but sportsmanship is a must in almost any sport.
With all of that said, it is very nice to see that Jules has people that are worried about him. A therapist once told me that there are only 2 types of people who will tell you what you need to hear: Those who love you, and those who hate you.
Jules...you might wanna listen to what the others have to say. You're on a dangerous path, let's see where it all lead up.
Once again, very well-written Harlow! I'm loving every chapter!

Nice job on this, Harlow! Really love how Julian's character's coming out bit by bit. Here's hope that his more experienced teammates will be able to rein him in and channel his anger and drive towards success instead of self-destruct. :)
OT, I have to say I hope as hell Hawaii's locker room is not like the one in that photo...otherwise I'm pretty sure most Kahunas won't be looking forward to renew their contract! XD
