
...the hatch creaked as magnetic locks released and the hull swung open to the outside. With a sigh the pilot unhooked the belts and restraints which keep him secure during combat. He had just received the 'all clear' and some fresh air was long overdue. One step at a time he climbed the short distance out of his cockpit and stretched his sore muscles. He could hear the fire behind him, a funeral pyre of twisted metal. Somewhere inside here the remains of his foe, slowly burning to ash. He took in the alien landscape through his ocular helmet before removing the protective headpiece. This planet was no paradise, but it did hold some strategic value in the eyes of strategists far above him in the chain of command. He would not think long on the matter as a small bloom of light flashed in the distance, the thump of heavy weapons following shortly after. The voices yelled in panic from his helmet, it looks like the all clear was a premature. Taking one last deep breath the pilot put his helmet back on and retreated to his sheltered cockpit buried in the center of his war machine. It was time to create more funeral pyres. As the magnetic locks clunked into their closed positions. He asked himself, "Who's funeral pyre will it be? Theirs? Or mine?"...
