Pikachu is actually in his pokeball but under the delusion that his is keeping Ash inside his own pokeball. Whenever Ash calls him out to fight the pokeball tricks Pikachu into going into "Ash's pokeball' in order to justify what is going on and keep Pikachu in a subjugative state.
