Tribal themed portrait commissioned by
of his character Tanatithe as a proud warrior of his tribe. I had originally drawn something completely different for this assignment but halfway through inking a better idea popped into my head, and I ended up doing this instead.
I love the big beautiful proud headdresses that native american warriors and chiefs wear, so I wanted to bring that through and give it my own feel, adding a bit more of a fantasy flair to it. I did do a bit of research on the meaning behind these extremely symbolic adornments though, and invite you to learn for yourself:

Luthien,
I'm bummed that you don't do ref sheets but, when I get one ready, I'll be fighting for a commission slot! My buddies
tanatithe and
suka86 are extremely pleased and excited about your work. I don't blame them! So am I. =)
As a Native American (citizen of the Southern Ute Tribe of SW Colorado), I saw this piece and I thought two things:
1) An interesting interpretation.
2) Research was done.
I applaud you for taking the time to do research into the piece and get a solid, basic understanding about it. I'd like to think most, if not all, artists do some research when needed but that's not always the case. Lastly, the piece has a great silhouette, good proportion of the piece to the wearer (They're big!), colors are good and, of course, creating a more fantasy-based version by implementing different feathers is a very nice touch!
Please continue the good work...

Thank you, I know using the headdresses as fashion props tends to be a hot button issue within the native american community so I definitely didn't want to step on any toes - but what I took away from most discussions was that it wasn't so much the use itself, but the ignorance of the wearer as to what it actually signifies to wear one, that was upsetting. I think they're absolutely stunning works of art, if nothing else - and they deserve a lot more respect than they get for sure. Glad to see my meaning wasn't lost here. :3
And I'll be happy to draw whatever you want when you're ready, already getting quite a collection for your friends. lol
