I love old Supras too The MKII MA67 (82-86) Celica/Supra being my favorite but the MKIII or MA70 is not bad. but the turbos are very unreliable and will warp a head easily. I could never afford a Supra when I was young and with kids now its not practical but in High school I had a 83 Celica GTS witch was close (even though it had a 4 cylinder truck motor)
The turbo was unreliable because of a factory screw up that they refused to admit. The factory spec for the head bolts is only 60lb-ft, when they really require 90. That was the first thing I did to mine, put head studs in with a metal head gasket and torqued to 90lb-ft. That was 5 years and many blasts down the drag strip ago and haven't had an issue since.
I didn't catch the head gasket before it blew, but I knew right away when it did and never let it get hot so the head didn't warp. The only other trouble spot on the 7MGTE is that if you run the oil too low it will spin main or rod bearings (I actually have a project engine that spun a rod bearing). The reason for this is that it is a high flow system, not high pressure. When at temp and at idle they only produce 6-10psi of oil pressure. Some builders go to either modified oil pumps or even convert to a dry sump system to take care of the problem, but that's more for pushing over 600hp.
If your planing to build a 7M-GTE stock with just minor reliability upgrades go for it but if you want to have bullet proof 300hp motor you would be better off doing a 1JZ-GTE or 2JZ-GTE swap. Its not really that hard and there are kit out now that make it easier. I helped a friend of mine swap a 2JZ-GE from a Lexus in a MKII the hardest part was wiring the ECU.
