Here's a somewhat blurry pic of the pretty engagement ring my Kani gave me. *purrrs* Opals for my dragon colour, aquamarine for my birthstone, and silver just because I like the metal.
We haven't set a date, yet, since that has to wait until we get the acceptance-letter from his government (I'm a Canadian, he's an American)... But invites will go out to thoseinterested in traveling to LA. *smiles all happy*

I love 'em, too- always have. Such pretty stones, and they come in the most astounding array of colours and types. I didn't know that until recently- was only familiar with the white and blue varieties... I'm not into diamonds- never could understand why those boring little rocks got so much press... and aquamarine is just a pretty stone, too. not sure what the wee stones are behind the opals- the jeweler said they were crystal of some kind, probably a good, clear quartz. Look at a Herkimer diamond some day (they're found in New York, I believe)- you'll see just how brilliant the common quartz can be. Now imagine that faceted. Wow.
one thing about opals DONT do dishes wearing the ring it will damage the stone skin ols will actually improve its luster and translucency (petting your opal is good for it )
i found a 1/2 carrot black opal in a junk box in a resale shop got it for 50 cents its in my treasures box one day ill be able to get it put in a custom ring for my mate she really likes them too

1/2 karat? You lucky dragon, you! Got a few of my gold bits like that- a nice heavy gold earring I got out of the lost and found box. it had been sitting there for over a year- it was obvious that the owner wasn't coming back for it, so I asked my boss if I could have it. Found a 14 karat gold watch-band in a bar once, that was pretty cool, too- same problem, couldn't find the owner, so I got to keep it.
Yeah, I'd heard about the don't soak 'em in water thing. I take it off when I take a shower or clean something. A lot of opals are covered with a quartz cap so I dunno if the cautions are even necessary for those. Mine doesn't seem to have any cover on it, though, so I'm pretty careful with it.

good opals dont have a cap (shouldnt need it if its a good one) if they do the possibility of damage is higher cause it holds moisture on the opal making it go cloudy which ruins the depth of sparkle in them
ahh gold i surprisingly cant enjoy gold it turns a off hazey green on me silver now thats my friend o platinum

Hmm, had no idea on that one- it's just something I'd seen before. Kinda thought the join where the cap is applied might be too tight for moisture to get in, but who knows? Water is pretty tenacious and it'll work it's way anywhere. I'm glad I can enjoy gold- it doesn't do anything weird on my skin like cause rashes, like it does for some folks. Silver, on the other hand, NEVER tarnishes on me. Dunno why- it tarnishes on almost anyone else...
Thank you... *bounces all silly* He let me pick it out. We'd been shopping around for several weeks (cut short by my travels back to Winnipeg) for a ring that had opals on it, and it seemed like hardly anyone bothered to carry them. We'd kept seeing this one jeweller's on the 3rd Street Prominade in Santa Monica. We'd wanted to go in, but they always closed early. On my first day back to LA from Winnipeg, we went for a walk down there in the afternoon and lo and behold! They were open, and it turns out the guy really likes opals- had dozens of pieces using them- nearly half a case full as opposed to the others only having one or two rings. It wasn't long before we had the one we both liked, at a reasonable price, too. Karma, I tells ya.
Ooh, congrats! I'd certainly be interested! But getting out there, aside from having work send me (and that's a rarity that they send me out to California. Usually team trucks go out there, not solo drivers. I'm surprised I'm there now! :P) would be extremely difficult. But hey, have fun for me! :P
You're a trucker? Cool! You're in Cali right now? North or South? Heh. I'll certainly have fun- I plan on having a long, happy life with my gold dragon. RAWR! We've even been nosing around the house markets, seeing if we can find something affordable with enough space for his office and my art studio (we both do some small amounts of work from home, and I'd love to be able to have room dedicated for my art and costume/clothing creations, out of the way of the rest of the house). Weee, art studio...
Yes! It's a fun job too! Get to see so many things! I was in Cali until Sunday; they're having me head homewards for some time off! But I was pretty much at any point between outside of San Fran (never far from CA-99 though) and Los Angeles. And, it'll probably be another year before I go any further west than Oklahoma again sadly. It's pretty country out there!
Good luck with getting the right house!

Some of the mountain drives would be hard to get tired of, they're so pretty... We're bouncing between working hard to buy now, in case the prices start going back up, or waiting because there may be a trend of slow but steady downward creep on house-prices. Personally, I'd preffer to try finding what we can, now- the current glut won't last long with all the would-be buyers jumping on the cheaper prices and we might not be able to find what we'd both like, even if the prices are livable again. Just a suspicion I have. Mind you, it could be nothing more thatn my brain going "get in there, before all the good bits are taken by those vultures!"
Yeah, it is... Part of me wonders what god is smiling on her, right now- iut's like everything is working in happy ways for the first time in my life... So odd... and so wonderful!
Sure, i'll let you know- so far, it's mostly filling out forms, paying fees (thank you Kani!) and... waiting. Lots of waiting.

Oh yeahs... *grins* I find the stone one of the more intersting- always something new to look at with an opal. ammonites, too- gorgeous stuff, that. I hope to find a piece I can afford, one day (ammonites are crazy expensive).
*hugs the rainbow!* Hiya, hon! *spins around on her head with you, 'cuz it looks fun*

*giggles* Well. maybe something will show up in my submissions, soon... That is, if FA's servers stop being dinks and let me upload some more pieces... Grrr. Was trying to post some pix of the tails i made for me and KaniS and the system borked on me- lets me do everything else, almost, but I can't seem to submit anything. How annoying.
I absolutely agree... having been married a long long time. I'm one of the fortunate few (it would seem) where my mate is my very best friend. If you have nothing else... that is so important.
LA was the first place we spent a weekend away together... I do hope the smog is not as bad as it was then.

I have yet to see any smog down here, thankfully.
And it appears that the "best friends" thing is very much in operation with my gold... *purrrs* I hope that lasts until I die. Heh. My first date with Kanis lasted two weeks... The longest "first date" either of us had experienced. 8giggle*
