I've been wanting to get pictures of this place for awhile now. But just haven't had the guts to do it due to its location on a very busy intersection. Today's weather was pretty bad for photography, so I'll probably head back sometime in the near future to shoot again.
As far as I can tell it was some sort of mixed-use store building with an apartment upstairs, and maybe a post office like many of these towns had. The building looks to be in decent shape, though a scrapper made off with some of the aluminum siding. I don't know why it was left unoccupied, but there are a large number of abandoned buildings in the area, so maybe I'm just missing something.
Blackbird, the name of this community, is very likely a reference to the large numbers of blackbirds that gather in the nearby watershed.

If it's at a busy intersection, and there are a number of abandoned properties clustered there, chances are one of the fine chains of convenience stores is preparing to knock them down to offer crappy food and cigarettes. Well, unless it's Wawa, in which case I kinda like their subs :)
There were other abandoned buildings along here, but all the neighboring buildings are in use, so I think its just a case of it being in disuse. I have seen it though where they'll buy up a bunch of old buildings and tear them down to build their store. Its something that honestly pisses me off because I hate to see large numbers of old buildings torn down for one soulless convenience store. I swear to God they go out of their way to do it too.
