Went out for a hike today in the snow and saw a Wood Duck for the very first time. Sorry my camera doesn't have better zoom - this drake was quite a beauty.

First time I've ever seen one and super excited. Alas, the boy seemed stressed and was making quiet sounds. I don't think he liked being near a road with some cars on it even if there weren't any people other than me there. Eventually he flew off when a truck came barreling down.

None of the people on the road ever saw him since he was sheltered under the bank. Probably the plan.

And now the only two times I've seen non-mallard ducks in Rock Creek Park have been right after it snowed. Last year I saw a pair of hooded mergansers there.

If I seem way too excited, it's cause I've really wanted to see a wood duck for a long time now and I'm still kinda hyper about it. Wood Duck!!!
