Whatever happened to "Battlebots", and TV shows of that ilk?
Back around the turn of this new century, programs like "Robot Wars" (from the U.K.) and "Battlebots" (from the USA) inspired inventive folks to create wireless weapons that would both defend themselves and try to destroy their opponents in an enclosed battleground. These robotic contenders usually originated as common household objects, like a toaster, a steel trash can, and - in the case of the following comic gag - a lawn mower.
'Donovan Lupus' (my wolf character) was about to mow the lawn, unaware of the recent alterations made to this piece of equipment by his nephew 'Jonathan'. Check it out...

Isn't it odd how the most interesting things we end up watching on TV are things we view from a hospital bed?! When I was recovering from angioplasty surgery (back in October, 2001), the hospital's TV service included a network with nothing but instrumental new age music and tranquil images of nature (with no narration). Why a channel like THAT doesn't exist today is just as much a mystery as to why "Robot Wars" and "Battlebots" aren't shown on the tube anymore...
The last season of Battlebots sort of showed us the problems with the format. The arena just wasn't strong enough to contain the action, as several times, bots were actually making holes in the lexan panels, all the way through.
It was just a matter of time before the walls were going to fail completely and the odds of somebody getting injured or killed were growing because the engineers who built the bots were getting smarter and more efficient while the panels and frame of the box they fought in were getting more and more beat up.
I don't think they had enough money to replace it.
