A stork of the Americas, the Jabiru likely has an Old World origin as the only member of its Genus in the New World. It’s name means ‘swollen neck’ in the Tupi-Guaraní language. They feed by tactile sensation of their beak to the water, at a 45 degree angle to sense passing fish. However, they also eat amphibians, molluscs, bird eggs, and small mammals.
